Chad & Richard were good secondary antagonists; Richard was certainly a better human villain than Windom Earle, and Chad was kind of a necessary character considering how otherwise-unrealistically-ethical the Twin Peaks PD is.

What are you talking about? He's cultivated a unique style that is incredibly creative, painstakingly detailed, and highly precise. Naming a better director requires naming amazing artists like Hitchcock or Kurosawa.

Yeah, I'm on episode 12 of season 2 and I'm definitely feeling the quality drop. There's no unifying theme to anything, it's just a bunch of different, usually weird, shit happening to different characters.

And the weird shit isn't unsettling or smart like it was in season one, it's just weird shit. Catherine dressing like a Japanese man in a really bad disguise. Nadine thinking she's a senior and also having super strength. The heavy implication that Bobby's dad was abducted by aliens. Denise wouldn't be weird if she was played seriously, but she's obviously intended to be more weird shit.

For all the pointless filler characters introduced in season 2, I thought Denise was decent enough. I mean, she's pretty much the only character introduced during the post-Lynch era that got referenced in The Return for reasons that weren't absolutely arbitrary to the progression of the series' storyline.

I guess the Garland Briggs storyline was pretty dumb in season 2 & originally just served as more filler, but season 3 does a lot to vindicate it - I don't want to say much more, but the Briggs family has a bigger role in The Return than they did in the original series.

But yeah, after the episode where Leland dies, it's literally a dozen episodes in a row that are mediocre at best. Thank god Lynch returned for the season/then-series finale.

Oh yeah, a couple more things to prepare for:
-You're nearing/possibly already on a subplot centered around James that's considered by many to be the show's nadir. Just absolutely dreadful.
-There's a scene I think either in episode 16 or 17 of season 2 where they attempt to recreate the atmosphere from the surrealist scenes prevalent during the Lynch era, and the results are disastrous.
-Get ready for a couple "romantic" subplots with basically nonexistent chemistry.

I love how Major Briggs' speech to Bobby and how he sees him living his life comes true in season 3. Bobby's in season 3 may have been my favorite of the old gang.

The last 20 minutes is the most unnerved I've ever felt watching a tv show.

That ending still haunts me as you can hear Sarah calling out Laura's name, Cooper looking confused about the events, and Laura screaming as the electricity goes out.

TC, there's no one way to interpret the ending so post what you think about it. Could be Laura shut down Sarah / Mother as demonstrated by the absence of electricity (the entities and Mother are connected to electricity such as the poles and outlets) or could be that Cooper and Laura are screwed and stuck in this different reality in which events played out differently.

I just finished season 2 yesterday. I enjoyed the filler bits as long as I didn't binge watch. A very slow and enjoyable burn.

This is going to sound totally random but it reminds me of Shenmue and how divided people are about it. it can be boring in long stretches but if you take your time and get lost in the details it's really fulfilling.

My favorite part is a tie between the reveal of the killer and the build up of The return. The way The return was filmed and the story told had me on edge from start to finish.

The Bang Bang Bar performances were pretty cool, but the James one had me scared. That was the moment I knew something was wrong.

I enjoyed it. However, it is definitely dated, and the original series declines in quality in it's original run. The last eight or so episodes seem to have little to do with the Return other than the fact that Special Agent Dale Cooper is stuck in the Black Lodge, and his doppleganger who is aligned with Bob has switched places with him in the regular world. The Return episodes from Showtime is really good I thought. There's some really interesting, experimental concepts that are well presented like not much else out there even though the way TV shows have grown is amazing.

Not yet. I downloaded FWWM to watch over the weekend, then will start S3 next week. Looking forward to it.

Enjoy! Both are a bit darker & different in tone from the original series - the season 2 finale is the only episode thats reasonably on-par with them in terms of sheer insanity.

If you enjoyed Gordon Cole & Albert Rosenfield from the original series, the character dynamic between the two of them is outstanding; one of the best comedic duos of the decade. Theres plenty of other cool things about The Return, but I felt that part in particular hasnt gotten enough recognition yet ITT. Also RIP Miguel Ferrer.

But you can bet your ass a modern Hitchcock would have had David Lynch sexism, weirdness, madness and violence.
