I'm pretty sure The Minuteman III can go faster than that at top speed. It's not unheard of technology.

I'm pretty sure The Minuteman III can go faster than that at top speed. It's not unheard of technology.

Perhaps, but the impact force of a 200 tonne missile traveling at 20 times the speed of sound would exceed the destructive capabilities of it's warhead.

to be clear the tonne rating of a nuclear warhead is the energy of its warhead rated in terms of the equivalent mass of TNT

not the actual weight of the payload

No, Russia (and China, and the US) are talking about a new class of weapon called a hypersonic one. Existing ICBMs are not necessarily 100% comparable.
