Board 8 > Finally watched Doctor Strange

that was better than I thought it would be.

haven't gathered my thoughts entirely yet but:

- the visual handling of space/time and the mystic world was fantastic.
- strange's sudden proficiency felt a bit rushed and sudden, but i think it was warranted given time constraints.
- mmmm rachel mcaddams....
- i have no clue what strange's origin story is in the comics, but the parallels drawn between his role as a physician and as a sorcerer are highlighted really well throughout the movie
- mads was a little bit wasted on this badguy role
- oh man dormamu
- i guess the last fight was a little anticlimactic, but i still think it was handled well, and it's really all strange could have hoped to accomplish. if he managed to stave off dormy in an actual battle, that would have defeated the entire threatening all-powerful multiverse shitting scariness of dormamu. so i'm glad they had strange have to resort on the power of an infinity stone to save the world.
- i also like that things didn't wrap up all peachy after hong kong was saved. there were consequences of strange's actions, so the movie doesn't suddenly wrap up all nicely.
- this movie feels really important for the overall MCU because it literally adds a new dimension to the entire universe. the avengers are pretty much 100% unaware of what the hell happened at all for this entire movie thanks to the mirror realm and the time stone.
- that entire fight sequence of hong kong rewinding was A+ and possibly one of my favorite scenes so far in MCU. also the part where the woman's brain splattered on the floor rewinding to her flying back into the un-crashing car was a little more graphic than i expected, but i appreciate that marvel wanted to specifically show the undoing of so much death and destruction.
- bomberman cabbagepatch was an excellent casting choice for strange imo

spiderman and maybe thor ragnarok tomorrow.

also, with regards to casting a white person for the ancient one, i didn't really share in the outrage back when the casting was first made known.

reading some of the director's comments on her and wong, it seems as if he had put a lot of thought and appreciation into his decisions.

This was the movie that started my turn around into legit enjoying Marvel movies again. Could be partly because I fucking love Dr. Strange but if anything I feel like that would make me judge it more harshly and I still loved it. The visuals are fucking incredible and easily the best thing about the movie - I was very unsure that Marvel would be able to capture just how otherwordly the magic Strange deals with is supposed to be, but they nailed it.

Definitely a top tier Marvel movie, yeah the biggest strengths (of many) being the visuals and Benadryl Cucumber's performance.

I was really surprised with Bendydick Cummysnatch actually, I didn't think he could carry something like this. But he really did nail it and it really opens up the MCU because of it.

If you enjoyed Bumblebee Pumpkinpatch in Doctor Strange I think you'll really like him in IW.

This movie defintely set a bar. Bramblepatch Scratch-n-Sniff turned in a great Strange character. He was indeed a surgeon in the comics.

Youll love the Strange/Stark interactions when you finally get around to Infinity War.

this is something I'm looking forward to. another egotistical smart man to stand toe to toe with stark, and strange legitimately knows of things stark for once can't wrap his mind around.

In all seriousness I loved the visuals as already mentioned, particularly a lot of the small details referencing spells/artifacts/beings from the comics. Mordo's boots (and the consistent effect even in far away shots of him skipping on air using them), the Staff of The Living Tribunal, stuff like that.

I thought it was a pretty bog standard Marvel origin story, so basically "fine" but ultimately the same old Iron Man/Captain America story with a different set of powers. Some of the visuals were neat and Humperdink Bandersnatch did a great job, but I wasn't upset I missed it in theaters when I watched the movie on Netflix. I did like Strange in Infinity War so I'm looking forward to his next solo movie.

i mean it is an origin story and it definitely goes through the checklist of above-average american goes through tragic accident finds answers but fights it at first then ends up excelling and saving the day while simultaneously managing to juggle a non-superhero love interest

but to me it seemed like the director was definitely mindful of that, and of the fact that mcu villains are pretty boring overall, and he did a pretty good job of streamlining the parts he had to in order to get to more interesting parts. like mordo was very well done, i think. mads's character didn't impact me one way or the other, so that wasn't as successful, but the fluid morality of the ancient one/strange and the strict ideology of mordo is something i really appreciate in this film. that scene where mordo says "HOORAY but also you done fucked up" to strange before walking away was really important to the weight of the film imo
