Loot boxes for items in single-player modes? Okay.
Actual improved weapons/gear in loot boxes that can't be earned otherwise? That's when the problems start.

I find it laughable that an actual country (Belgium) had to make them illegal and the proposed sentence is comparable to what you can get for rape/murder in the U.S.

People actually like lootboxes? The only time it's fine is when you can't buy them with real money.

I don't hate microtransactions. I hate the random aspect behind them. If a new weapon is added to a game and it costs a flat $5 to unlock it, I have no problem with that. If a new weapon is added and it costs $20 in loot boxes to even have a small chance to get it, that's bad. I've heard of people spending hundreds of dollars on supply drops in Black Ops 3 and not getting one of the good new weapons. That's not a microtransaction. That's bait to sucker people in.

Microtransactions for cosmetics is one thing. Normally idgaf about skins, colors, camos, etc qnd use whatever the game has available. Maybe if I see something once in a while that I fancy, I'll throw my $5 or $10 in and get it. Fortnite for example, I spent $10 for a skin and an emote. Doesn't break the game and makes my personal experience better. DLC characters for games like Smash Bros or Injustice 2, I get those as well, because I like the games, characters and lore of the series. Nothing wrong with throwing in $5 every month for a new character to play as.

Then you have greedy pay2win antcs like SWB2 and their awful progression system. That's where I draw the line.

The game should make you want to spend time earning, The game shouldn't make you want to spend money so you don't have to earn with time. Literally making the gameplay boring and tedious so you will pay not to play it.

Like, a loot box for a cosmetic item. I wouldn't go to a store and spin a roulette a bunch of times to buy a shirt, I'd just buy the shirt. It's absurd.

Then there's using gambling to bypass work that not everyone can do, and ugh.

In order for a loot box system to make money they have to destroy the in game method to get items, otherwise the dedicated players (who are the most likely to buy Boxes) would quickly have everything they want.

Like how it is in non micro transaction games.

none of these are really good tbh

the whole thing is just a lazy way to make money off peoples' desire for a quick thrill and lack of understanding of simple probability to the point where it often negatively affects the quality of the game in other areas because what's the point of making a quality game when you can just stick a game-shaped facade on top of a casino

it's super predatory and the games do all kinds of things to hide just how much you're getting ripped off (being vague about win rates, offering small amounts of free money, making you buy a currency that you then spend on game stuff instead of spending directly so it's harder to see directly how much it costs) but it also pulls in so much cash there's basically no reason not to do it

if there's another gaming crash any time soon it's definitely going to be lootbox/gacha related

Because actual adults are actually responsible about how the spend their money. They are targeted at children, that is actually the biggest issue.

Let alone the fact that some of them are literally pay to win, like BF2 was, with items that were basically "Do more damage as long as you have this equiped" only being obtainable through lootboxes.

I just want to know who is buying all this shit. Some of these free to play games like smite, etc its almost 5$ for a CHANCE at an item and its usually just a cosmetic skin. Fuck that. Maybe Id pay it if i really wanted it and it was guarunteed but for a chance? No way.

Does anybody actually enjoy frittering away their money? I'd much rather pay up front, get the transaction over with and then enjoy a constant barrage of dopamine hits. Lootboxes and other mechanisms that continually nag you for money are like the exact opposite of that.
