This Ancestry thing sounds like a fad/scam, just like those neo-diets that change every month.

I think the only legit way to be sure nobody is screwing Round with it or just giving you fake results to satisfy curiosity is to keep your records, ask family, and trace it yourself. There are also people who do this tracking old-schools style (with literal written records and history).

my grandfather was into old school genealogy like 15-20 years ago, he actually traced my family back to the Mayflower through written records. but that's not really surprising since I'm white and 100% western European and live in eastern Mass. we did a family tree project in 8th grade and I had literally every family member on mine through about 8 generations back, then the rest were mostly full with some people missing

My girlfriend also did it recently. Her results weren't that exciting though. Her father's family is all italian and her mother's sanity is all just white-white-BeenInAmericaForGenerations white.

When she got her report it basically was half Italian, half British, with a few random whatever shit in there.

Seems legit enough for me.

Those tests results are put into law enforcement registries so if they have DNA for a crime they match if against it.
