You will be missing out on a lot as kratos's past is very important to his character. The game is about breaking the cycle and you won't even know what the cycle is. Play the past games. They are cheap as hell and 100% worth it. Don't you dare touch the new one before you do. If you are only wanting the new game because of good reviews, know that the good reviews won't mean shit to you if you aren't invested in the story (very story heavy game). A video compilation will not do it justice.

dont bother playing the past games, looks like this game is completely changing the tone anyway so dont get attached to the old kratos and you'll probably have more fun with the new GoW.

here's a summary of the first 3 games: Kratos is an eternally pissed, ultra-violent Spartan soldier who is really good at killing, he is tricked by Aries to kill his family, first he gets sad, then he gets mad, then he gets REALLY mad, and then he spends the whole God of War trilogy trying (and succeeding) in killing just about every single Greek god.

Kratos' past, in essence:

1) Kratos is a Spartan dude who fought for Ares. Ares tricked him into killing his own family.

2) Kratos got revenge on Ares and became the new God of War.

3) Zeus didn't like that so he tossed Kratos into Hades. Kratos is like "I'm-a kill every god." He then proceeds to do so, causing massive physical destruction to the Earth in the process.

And done.

In short, Kratos was a tragic figure in the first game and in every subsequent game he drifts further and further from justifiably tragic into just plain megalomaniacal. Pretty sure this game is an attempt to walk that back.

I played through the entire trilogy back in 2011 when PSN was down, even though I had the option to jump straight to 3

You can play 1/2/CoO/GoS on the Vita/Playstation TV, the latter of which is extremely cheap
