Not even close. While there are a handful of disturbing trends, the past year was a phenomenal one from a game release standpoint.

It's not just the games being released (which IMO aren't that interesting for the most part), it's having to download and install every game, having to download nonstop patches, online multiplayer only (which will be shut down eventually), the lack of backwards compatibility from Sony, etc.

2004 was the last good gaming year. Most will probably disagree, and they're entitled to their opinions on the matter, but I'm not budging on this.

For the most part yes. Remasters and retreads. Cinematic Experiences and games that basically play themselves.

its only a low point if you slave yourself to one console(and more specifically a PS4 or XB1)

if you have a PC+Switch+PS4/XB1 and still think its at a low point then idk what to tell you

There have been some decent games, but all the negative shit casts a giant shadow over any of that. The microtransactions, lazy remasters, uninspired gimmicks, and just plain shitty games run rampant because gamers bend over without question. The gaming industry is a fucking joke, and I hope it comes crashing down.

I think a lot of people look on previous generations with rose tinted glasses and forget all about the mediocre crap that nobody talks about anymore.

This generation is pretty well balanced all things considered. Console game performance is way better than it was last generation. Video game prices seem to drop quickly and aggressively for the majority of titles. The Switch has made portable gaming more significant again. Indie games have really stepped up and there's a shitload of hidden gems out there if you're willing to look for them. PC gaming just keeps on rising.

No because games that previously came out still exist. The one exception might be MMOs or online-only games that were taken down.

But all the single player games that came out in the past are still out. There's more variety. There's no reason why people need to be limited to the last year of releases. I bet there are tons of games people would love that they have never played that are already out.

i say this with full knowledge that I have a very niche taste in games

i don't think I've enjoyed a game that's been released since dark souls 3

I can't think of any game I've bought and enjoyed in years. Dark Souls isn't even my niche, its about the most, uhm, mainstream (I guess?) game I enjoy, but I basically go back to the same cycle of games every time. Dwarf Fortress, SC2, Path of Exile. Mount and Blade: Warband too, recently, but that's been out since 2011 or something.

I've had a hunger, a fuckin burning desire to get back in to EVE but, well, it's a slow-motion car crash of a game right now. It pains me that such a game will never exist, and the only one that does exist is in its death throes for purely human reasons. And maybe that's just the end-stage of a game like EVE. When you give humans full control of a massively-deep political stage, a very inspiring drama plays out over fucking 15 years and then it settles in to space-European Union.

All that to say, the games I like are a dying breed and the ones still around I have hundreds or thousands of hours in.

Doesn't help that this is probably the busiest I've been in my entire life, though. :P

the absolutely lowest point of gaming was in the early 2010s when it was all CoD clones with online passes, but this gen is a very close second imo

i think part of it is me getting old, but games are getting blander, duller, and more same-y every single day. i can count the number of games ive played this gen i felt were truly great on one hand, and i prob wouldnt even use every finger

Loot crates, GPU shortage, design stagnation, sequels after sequels, most games being easy mode af, no major MMOs worth a damn. DRM, no backwards compatibility with most consoles, major developers consolidating (EA gobbling everyone up) generational lifetimes shrinking . . .

But it's also easier than ever for people to get into the industry and indie devs to pump out content.
Better anti-hacking measures, communities are arguably less toxic . . .

Eh. I'm old, I have my own biases, I think gaming is worse than 10 years ago but there are arguments either way.

Much of my interest in gaming died in 2011, when I was 15. Rarely ever bought games from that point on.

Now I neither buy nor play games that often anymore.

why are you on gamefaqs then

Absolutely not. The last couple years have been awesome for gaming.

The first couple years after a new gen are always weak on games. Now that we've entered the prime of this gen there is an assload of great games out.
