Any dishonest vendor will do the same around the world. Taxi scams are also rampant, taking tourists around on a longer path, charging extra on the meter, and even bringing you to another destination instead of where you asked.

I like to think I make cab drivers uncomfortable when abroad because I'll put the directions into my phone GPS prior to flagging one down and then make sure they see that I'm tracking our path when I tell them where I need to go.

I stick with Uber or other taxi apps when I travel abroad, or ask for a quote prior to the ride. I will use a hired metered taxi as a last resort.

The point being that Mexico isn't exactly a gleaming ray of hospitality, so anyone who claims it is racist to not want people who came from nations like that illegally to be embraced with open arms is full of it.
