I'm out of the loop with cancer diagnosis. Why didn't/couldn't they tell you all this stuff at once? Seems unnecessary to bring you back several times to update you rather than telling you all at once what you have and the stage it is at. Seems TC has insurance so going to these multiple appointments wasn't expensive.

Looks like a 65% 5 year survival rate for stage 4 lymphoma and with you being young it should be even higher. You got this

This is completely irrelevant as there are many distinct variants of lymphoma across several cell lines, some being completely curable with a single dose of medication, and some being untreatable.

But being young is almost always a huge benefit for survival and cure rates.

What type of treaments are needed, chemo, radiation?

They're gonna be putting me on chemo for sure. 4-6 months of it. After 2 months they'll take a look at how my progress is.

Depending on a number of factors they'll maybe wanna follow up with some radiation.

My doctor still seemed very optimistic even with this. It's just very demoralizing hearing it's spread and that I won't be able to work. Because I fucking love my career.

Shuto-uke posted...

How did they discover it? I mean, first symptoms, etc

I had really drenching night sweats for several weeks and had a dry cough that lingered for a few months. Was also just feeling tired and somewhat nauseous all the time.

Went into my docs and she felt some swollen nodes. Sent me off for an ultrasound and CT scan. Then she said "Yup looks like Lymphoma"

SuperMariano3 posted...
Why didn't/couldn't they tell you all this stuff at once?

They have to do a bunch of different scans and biopsies and stuff to exemine my body and the cancer closely to see how it grows and progresses and what areas it's affected.

So it starts out with "you have cancer" then they go to specifics

backguard222 posted...

All the while.... possibly on a "medical" supplement

True. I have that to look forward to. :P

bluezero posted...

I'm sure they wanted to get the diagnosis right. Maybe each test is a different process.

You can fight through this, Doom. Much

Mhm that's exactly how it went. It's all part of a process.

And thank you :)

The drugs are standard, sure. The difference is that Hodgkin's Lymphoma is super sensitive to chemotherapy drugs. According to Uptodate and the most recent studies, he has about a 95% long-term survival rate.

A lot of it has to do with the specific kind of B cell in Hodgkin's, known as the Reed-Sternberg cell, which has unique properties that make it a much easier target for chemotherapy.

I thought you were told it was treatable and not that advanced like a month ago?

It's still a curable form of cancer just at Stage 4 the prognosis is more negative. Means it spread to another organ. In this case my lung.

The original diagnosis was just "Lymphoma"

Then it became "Hodgkins Lymphoma"

Now today I got the specific staging

My dad had stage 3. It was almost at his lungs, but not quite. Some crappy doctor basically said it was nothing but he got another opinion a while later after it got worse, iirc.... I think he was given a 25% chance to die then, but science has gotten much better at dealing with it. Hopefully it goes well. Either way, I do not envy your journey. Good luck, sir.

FFS don't say stuff like this if you don't understand Oncology. It depends entirely on what kind of lymphoma it is. Even Stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma has an excellent prognosis.

Cancer is not a singular disease. "Lymphoma" is no more specific than "infection". A lot depends on the cell line, the specific mutation, expressed chemotherapy targets on cell surfaces, etc. The stage is simply related to how far the cancer has spread, not how "dangerous" the cancer is.
