I'm looking to buy a handgun, and obviously, I want to fire the handgun to get some experience and practice. This might seem like an odd question, but the firing ranges around me do not allow you to bring your own ammunition, and they seem to charge an incredibly inflated price for the ammo and paper targets, in addition to the range time. Is this normal?

Maybe you should buy something else then

Like a Nerf gun. Then you can shoot it at your friends.

Yes. You're going to have to either buy your own weapon or pay high fees for renting one and buying ammunition. And considering you can buy a cheap handgun for a few hundred dollars, the cost of entry to purchasing very quickly pays for itself.

I have fired some handguns for free as an interested customer ("demo units"; limited to a couple rounds); so I guess I mean more like after I purchase the one I want and then go to the range with my own handgun.

Do some research and pick a gun or two to try out at the range. Buy one you feel comfortable with.

I have held quite a number of handguns, and out of them, I felt comfortable enough with Beretta M9, S&W P22, and Glock 19 to try test firings (as described in post #6).

You only need to buy their ammo when you're trying their guns. If you bring your own you can bring your own Walmart ammo. Only thing you should be paying for I'd a membership fee.

Ah; gotcha. I'll try to find out more about the ranges around me then, because I was under the impression that I had to use their ammo even if I bring my own gun.

Found a range that let's you bring your own ammo. $100 initiation fee + $35/mo for the low tier membership or $25/hr... Geez! Owning a gun is expensive.

What I want to know is, how the hell is it like shooting a gun without hearing protection. Because I've fired a few weapons but was always well equipped but I am wondering like what if you have to fire a gun at home at an intruder is it going to blow out your ear drums?

The closest range requires you to buy ammon from them, regardless if you own your own gun or not, and it's overpriced at $0.75/9mm. But the range fee is cheaper, at $15/hr...

Sneak outside in the early morning hours and fire it into the ground.

People do this all the time around me here in the city limits.

The police might roll through but even they know it's just some shenanigans.

Shoot a couple of rounds without protection. That way you know what to expect, especially inside enclosures. That being said, firearms wont blow out the ear drums unless you put the barrel near your head.
