Got done with an all day interview that I thought went extremely well. I was talking and joking with the last guy to interview me and he gave me a tour around the office. Now I hear that they have decided to move forward with another applicant.

Like, I've bombed interviews but I actually thought I did really well at this one. No idea what could have possibly happened.

This whole process is super irritating.

You need to hit the bricks boy, there are a million jobs out there and you need to just walk in every day and keep bugging them, that's how I paid for this million dollar house with my 80 Grand a year low skill job

There you go. Someone else was better qualified, a better fit, or just interviewed better.

Dont dwell on it and focus on future opportunities.

It sounds like you at least got a concrete rejection. I hate when they just ghost you. If you get rejected in their resume collection stage when they get 500 people, I understand why you might not hear anything. Even in the phone interview stage I've come to expect that I won't usually hear back. But if you bothered to come out to their office and spend four hours with them, and they can't even take a couple minutes to send you a canned rejection email? Fuck them.

As for your scenario, I have gotten feedback sometimes, either unprompted or just politely asking. You could still ask, depending on how long ago you got the rejection and how it was sent. Like if it was an automated email I wouldn't bother, but if you got a fairly customized email from a specific person you talked to, it might be worth a shot.

Just get a skill that's wanted and you'll never have that problem again. Whenever I quit a job, I'm like the belle of the ball. All the companies fight to try and get me hired.

Maybe it has to do with where you live.

Your credentials are a dime a dozen here in socal. The big states that have good public university systems are graduating stem majors like crazy these days.

It is all how you market yourself. I have a professionally made portfolio that cost me $500 with a branding agent. I have literally never not gotten a callback or second interview.

Damn, your credentials sound way better than mine, and if you can't get many hits, I must have no chance.

Could just be how you're applying. I'm sure you know all this, but a lot of application portals are just keyword readers and your resume could get passed over for stupid reasons, like issues it has parsing text. I've grown to consider them to be basically a waste of time. Some people will tell you "you should be completing X applications a week" but I think that's total horeshit, completing an arbitrary number doesn't really help you in any way.

My advice would be, first, if you're using a third-party search (which you probably are), once you find a position you like, make sure to go to the company's actual website and see if the position is there. Keep an eye out for positions that give you an email address to apply to; those are the best ones since it usually goes directly to somebody. Watch out for applications that are filled out through a third-party ATS, which you'll start to recognize as you apply more and more. Some are okay but some are crap; generally, the more redundant fields you have to fill out, chances are it's an outdated and shitty system. Stay away from those unless it's a company you really want to apply to and don't have another way.

I'll look at my resume again then.

Also, don't do anything with monster.com. I've been receiving spam and scams since I applied.

Oh, on that note, I'd recommend creating a separate email for your jobs. I used my personal email for the longest time and finally got fed up with being contacted because they found my resume on some list I didn't intend to sign up for. Though I've gotten better in general at just avoiding getting on those entirely.

Ziprecruiter sucks, too, I always would get spam from them, though I think a couple times I got a legit call about an opportunity. I mean sometimes you find a company without a careers page on their website, in which case applying on LinkedIn or Indeed or Ziprecruiter might actually be the way to go. But that's pretty rare, and you gotta ask yourself, do you really want to be a software engineer at a place with such a bad website?
