A Wrinkle in Time disappointed in its opening weekend, getting smacked down by Black Panther which had already been out for 3 weeks.

Black Panther.

Yet racism is to blame for Wrinkle's failure.

Ava DuVernay, a black activist who directed a whole movie arguing that mass incarceration (a multi-racial problem) is a continuation of race-based slavery, suggested that racism explains why her latest movie, "A Wrinkle in Time," got bad reviews.

Of course this kind of stupidity is going to be negatively reviewed. No one wants to pay money to see a book translation ruined by dumb shit racial victim conspiracies.

Are you schizophrenic?

I mean, drawing the line between those requires your notion of a line to be something closer to a polynomial a of exceedingly large order.

Also, it's a completely reasonable thing to discuss. Most people don't realize how insecure black girls often are about their hair. I didn't realize it until college when my social group became way more diverse.

It's completely reasonable to mention that white people "didn't understand" her movie and to blame the negative reactions from white reviewers on that?

No, she's not talking about the movie, even. Just the one little tidbit that you have no idea about because you didn't even see the movie. It, like, had nothing to do with the movie's plot.

Come now on this board saying "thug" people automatically assume black and young.
With that in mind why is it that this tweet is only allowed to be understood in such a laser narrow focus of the written lines?

not the film, a small part of a character. basically the main character has curly hair and is insecure about it. this is not something a lot of white people will generally pick up on as something that many black women will go through. a white journalist had a conversation with the director and was apparently the only one to have a discussion about the hair
the tweet isn't blaming the movie doing poorly on white people being racist, just one character trait that flew over the heads of many white journalists

Sounds like another film adaptation that failed to live up to the expectations of the book. Reminds me of The Golden Compass in that fashion, in that they removed a lot of the subtext surrounding the protag and antag's movements because of religious controversy, and then ended the movie about 2/3rds of the way through the 1st book.

I think she complained one time when her mother was brushing it. To call that a minor point would be like saying Cinderella liked the color blue was a minor point.

Or, as it seems more indicative of the articles posted in this topic, the casting of Oprah, the race of the director/her political vies, and the exclusion of heavy Christian themes has made it a political target for people

The funny thing about this ludicrous article about the director claiming the movie is doing bad because of racism is that it actually demonstrates that at least some proportion of the negative press is highly politically charged.

It's funny, because I didn't even like the movie all too much and I find myself here defending it, because it's just some ordinary child sci-fi movie. But people are attacking it disproportionately, with obvious political bias.
