Did it stand no chance against the PS2? Was piracy too impactful? Was the reputation of Sega in tatters with consumers?

What went wrong with the Dreamcast? Do you think Sega could have done anything differently in hindsight?

I think the writing was on the wall for sega when they released it (the Saturn wasn't competitive with nintendo and Sony in the previous gen) and I think a lot of developers were holding out for the ps2 that followed a year later.

So yes they were first to market but I think they were already irrelevant by that point.

IMO it was lack of games. It had some very good games, but there weren't many being made for it.

Exactly this. After offering terrible support for the Genesis add-ons and killing off the Saturn so quickly, no one had much faith in Sega. The PS2s arrival was merely the finishing blow for the Dreamcast.

Launch titles were lacking in Japan, took another year to come out everywhere else and it was piracy friendly.
Poorly planned launch, lack of support/reason to choose it over competitors and iffy launch library (which can kill any system, no matter how good it is).

hardly anyone really knew about it or wanted one in the us, unless they were really into sega or console gaming in general. i had one on launch day because i was a big sega fan at the time. i think the main cause of the demise was their advertising campaign failed miserably and was basically nonexistent. also i think people looking forward to the PS2 pretty much ate away at what little enthusiasm was left for the system.

Sonic Adventures graphics were mind blowing at the time. Crazy Taxi was the shit. I adored toy commander and soul caliber

Not many people know about this game but Speed Devils was super fun

The Dreamcast failed because Sega was already on borrowed time. No Sega CD and 32X would've certainly allowed the Saturn to perform better and that would have greatly benefitted the DC, as there'd be a fanbase to migrate. They were flops that only damaged customer confidence beyond repair. The Saturn flopped because of them, and paid it forward. The PS1 would've taken a bite out of it regardless, but certainly not to the same extent. People will pay more for something they want.

Secondary to that, there was very little in terms of anti-piracy measures in the DC.
