matchmaking and Elo rating just creates too much toxicity and I'm tired of it. turn on any multiplayer game right now and it's just non stop blaming, and flaming. I'm so sick of it

matchmaking:
you play with people who are close to your skill level so you never get better. you play with different people every game so people flame each other all the time because you will probably not meet again. what kind of garbage is a team based game where your "team" is a bunch of strangers pit against each other from minute 1??????

Elo rating:
primary cause of toxicity probably. if you lose your rating goes down. if you play a lot of games and you feel like you're improving, but your rating doesn't improve... you feel like shit. the game is telling you that you suck. every loss makes you more and more angry so you start raging. 3 loss streak can't possibly be your fault so you start blaming.

For years I refused to play ~any~ game with match making ever since the one time I tried Gears of War online and I kept getting put in this lobby where this kid kept kicking me for ~playing the game~. I only relaxed that rule slightly when I started to play Rainbow Six Siege.

I can't disagree. I can't wait for the next Left 4 Dead. Now that's a game where the multiplayer works right. The team that works together best wins, and if someone's not pulling their weight, you just vote to kick them. After a few rounds of weeding out the idiots, you usually end up with a pretty kick ass team of randoms.

yeah it's like: can't we choose our own lobby?
I remember when I played TF2, before matchmaking, there was this community server that I joined. and every time I logged in they were having such a good time. and nobody flamed because they would be kicked. The same people were on there all the time, and you could actually have the opportunity to make friends that way. It was great.

I have the same memories, joining the same server and there would be a couple of user name's you'd recognise and it's kinda like a community. was cool. 24/7 fort.

My last match making experience was R6 saying "great work, team" in team chat after we won and someone responded "what? you didn't do anything noob" then disconnected

please i came second i got more points than you did why are you doing this we had good team work we won decisively why would you even reply this and then quit did you do it just to try to upset me well i guess it worked cause i still think about it months later were you having just a bad day were you in a bad mood but then again i said you did WELL

I'm not salty about that at all.

At all.

Activision patented a matchmaking formula that is designed to intentionally match you up against people of superior equipment and skill to encourage you to purchase balance effecting micro transactions (like loot boxes), and match you up against people if inferior equipment and skill after making a purchase to make you feel like your purchase was worth it.

In a sense this should work because you should improve to beat the people who are the same skill level as you. As long as you're improving. The real reason it doesn't work is because there's people out there who seem to have never picked up a video game before.

This happens because these games are competitive in nature but most of the people that play them don't know how to handle things like losing. I know tons of people don't consider e-sports to be real sports, but competing is the same regardless of what form it's in. The people who rage cause they lose a few games probably never learned how to take a loss. Mostly because that's something you learn when playing a sport back in school, but I'm sure lots of people who play competitive games never did that.

sort of but that totally ignores the team aspect. you don't play sports with a bunch of random people it just doesn't work like that.

the most rewarding time I've spent in Dota 2 was playing with my friends in a team. because you can really get a sense of each others play styles and be more cohesive and just have way more fun that way.

what COUNTERS this is the fact that the game rewards playing alone because of the Elo MMR or ladder or whatever. it sort of breaks up teams. all of a sudden some of your friends want to grind MMR alone instead of play together. so the rest of them just quit.

for this to be part of both parts.

Also, you do kinda play sports with a bunch of random people. The difference is you're on a team so you spend more time together practicing said sport. Which then lessens the randomness of your own team but your opponents are still random people that you don't know.

I think the problem here is that you're expecting it to be like an organized sport when really, it's more like going to the park and playing 5v5 basketball with whoever happens to be at the park that day.

If you want it to be more organized, try to get yourself into some scrims. I've heard that if someone wants to take the game more seriously, scrims are the best place to do that. Yeah, you don't get elo for doing custom scrim matches, but you should improve a lot more which should make you more able to basically carry when you have to solo queue. Of course, there are some people that really just can't be carried.

I completely agree with this. I used to play comp Overwatch and the best thing you could do in a team game is to solo queue.

The elo and matchmaking systems aren't great and they really need to improve or come up with something new. Even just having a ranked ladder for a full team to queue in would be great. Or just not penalize them for queuing in a group.

And when ganon and I queue together, stop giving us a Hanzo that shoots straight up yet still misses both the sky and the ground....

he makes a lot of really good points for sure. What Dota does if you're playing in a stack is that it usually puts you against another stack of similar avg rank. These kinds of games can be really unbalanced (really hard or really easy) but that is only natural. So I think that is the kind of system he wants in OW.

But it seems like OW has only one rank per player. Dota has 2 ranks, a solo rank and a party rank. The party rank is generally seen to be unimportant so that's why party queue in Dota is sort of dis-incentivized. It's interesting how these two games differ in rank system but in some ways have the same faults.

The last time I truly felt online gaming was of the highest quality would've been from Halo 2 to Black Ops 1. There were a lot of duds during that time, but there was so much good stuff to love that it didn't matter. Now it's just so bleh for a number of reasons.
