No the arguement is why should law abiding citizens have more of their rights stripped away when criminals who dont follow the law to begin with will not be effected.

Make policy that targets criminals, criminal activities, and is not fucking over the good people.

you think having regulations and restrictions (with enforcement) have zero effect on criminals? I don't see how that could be the case. Whether or not its "worth it" is a different question, but it certainly would have some effect, no?

Making it marginally more inconvenient to get your hands on a legal gun will not "fuck over" or really even affect good people in a meaningful way, but could keep it out of the hands of an antisocial loser in high school who isn't gonna know how to find an AR15 on the black market.

Just make murder illegal.

That way gun nuts can keep their guns AND no one will get killed anymore! Win/win

I agree that gun laws will make it more difficult to find a gun, but since guns are both a method for malice and self-defense, there really wouldn't be any effect on crime or homicide even if it does reduce "gun violence."

On the flipside, should we have incredibly draconian laws that ban/restrict things based on appearance as opposed to function?

I'm a liberal and do happen to own a gun. Some arguments from the pro gun crowd are perfectly valid. The "bad people break laws argument" is absolutely infuriating though. Why the hell is anything illegal if you want to use that argument?

No laws means there would be no punishments for actions. Criminals may break the laws, but at least when they do that we can punish them.

Laws are intended as legal nets for discouraging EVERYONE from committing crimes. They're not really about targeting just a specific type of criminal because, like a net, some things will still pass through.

Most criminals who intend to do something that breaks a law are not concerned about legality; they don't care about the law to begin with. They're going to pass through.

The law is there to discourage everyone else who sees these criminals breaking the law from thinking "oh so we can all do this". Instead, because of the existence of the law witnesses are more likely to report the criminal behavior, which benefits society on a wider scale because typically no one wants to be the victims of said crimes.

Which is exactly why we should remove the licensing of cars. Innocent people can sometimes not afford the fees or to get a car to get their license, but are punished and unable to buy a car without a license. Meanwhile, criminals continue to drive without licenses and doing whatever they want. Car licensing is unconstitutional and it only takes law-abiding citizens off the road.
