Well?

Figure everyone would consider 8/16-bit eras retro so let's start with the 32/64-bit one.

definitely

I mean, think of it this way, we already thought of SNES as retro by the mid-2000s, right? And it came out in 1990. The Saturn came out in 1994.

Sure but the question is about how it feels and not whether it's mathematically consistent.

yeah that's true

some of the early 3D games actually feel more retro to me than late 16-bit games since I feel that later pixel based games, especially on SNES/Genesis with their ability to scale and rotate sprites easily, aged better than early polygonal ones

I've always associated GBC as just being the Gameboy in color with a few exclusives.

now this is something that is mathematically consistent with previous generations but does not ring true to me

I think possibly because I basically stopped gaming for real around this time, so I'm not 100% sure how games have changed in the interim. I feel like with earlier retro generations, there were pretty big shifts in the styles and sorts of games that came out. Like adventure games going from text to point and click to not being a thing any more, for instance. Or the rise and fall of JRPGs. Dunno what has happened since the PS2, though.

Also true. PS1's 2D games still look great and play great because 2D graphics fell out of popularity shortly thereafter (except of handhelds which were a step back technologically anyway) but the 3D games look terrible and some of then play terribly too because that gen was the Atari 2600 of the 3d era.

That's exactly how I look at it. You play something like Donkey Kong Country on the SNES and it looks much better and plays much better than ... take your pick of poor early 3d games.
