The living room stays reasonably clean, whereas the family room it's okay for the kids to wreck. I've never really had both but I can see why it would be useful

I had an upper middle class friend who had a living room that no one was allowed to use; it was just some (really nice) sofas/chairs and a coffee table.

A million dollar plus home I helped work on not long ago has a living room, a music room (essentially an living room with your CDs in it), a playroom, and a den.
