I'm having the same problem.

Apparently it's normal to feel like it's the dumbest game ever for the first few hours? Then, supposedly, it picks up and becomes amazing.

I'm going to give it more time.

The weapons are MASSIVELY different in how they play. If you're a bit bored, try switching it up. You may also find the pickup online more fun since you're with other people.

Try a different weapon maybe

was thinking that, i cant decide what clicks with me. so far i like the sword and shield best but it's a bit boring & feels like a noob trap. long sword is ok but feels too imprecise, and the charge sword is cool but kind of complicated and not fast enough for dodging. i might give ranged weapons a shot but they look boring

Is there something about it you're not enjoying, or is it a more overall feeling?

what comes to mind:

- boss battles take forever, for what feels like no reason. it's not like they're switching forms or changing the arena, it's just that you slap an enemy around, he runs away, you run after him, rinse repeat for 30 minutes or so

- combat feels floaty. seems like you get behind some giant enemy with questionable hit boxes and then start dialing in combos and hope that it connects

- multiplayer feels way too chaotic. maybe i will get used to it but i cant really tell what the other players are doing

- game mechanics are really poorly explained

- overall setting and vibe isnt really gripping me, like the aesthetic

- online infrastructure is terrible, at least on Xbox where I'm playing. i fail to connect to lobbies nonstop, there is insane lag in matches, etc. i'm on a wired & fast connection and this is the only video game i have that consistently gives me problems. apparently this is across the board for xbox players

I had a lot of the same issues when I tried the WiiU one. Nothing is explained. The boss runs away every 2 minutes. Turns out I have to stop and sharpen my weapon every 2 minutes. It felt like they were making it annoying on purpose.

There's ways to make the monster not run away. Especially when they're weak. Remember to use your slinger. If they drop red ammo on the floor shoot them with it when they're dipping. They'll almost always stop and try to fight back. Also the early monsters shouldn't take you 30 minutes to beat other than the Anjanath. I hate to say it but you have to git gud.

yea i hate the lack of a health bar, i cant tell how far into the fight i am or how i am even doing. i just slap a monster with a sword for 30 minutes until i go "oh yea, he's dead"

There is sort of one in this game. It's the heart beat indicator underneath the monster's icon on the bottom left of your screen. It gets smaller the less health a monster has. It also shows when a monster is in rage mode by flashing yellow.

Not sure what advice I can give that hasn't already been given, tbh. He's past the Anja Noob Wall so it's not a case of piss easy monsters. He's aware of different weapons. Though it does sound like he's just randomly attacking and hoping some crap connects, but you either learn or don't, especially depending on weapon. *shrug* Though if you're going after something for 30 minutes, you're doing something very wrong.

It's not my favorite MH by a long shot but I think it has a good base to build from.

One of the best games ever imo.

But honestly if you don't like it now you probably won't like it later or in high rank or whatever. I mean you straight up say you don't like the setting and the aesthetic and all that. The charm is one of the big draws of the game, so if it doesn't do it for you, it's that much harder to get into.

I just can't get away from maining the GS. At this point, I feel like if I were to try another weapon, I'd create a totally new character to experience the struggle from the very beginning.

Sword and Shield has a pretty low damage output, so unless you're constantly attacking it every second, fights are going to take half an hour or more. I'd try the other weapons. They have more of a learning curve but a much higher damage output.

Umm...can I ask what armor you have and what level it is? >_>

The main addicting part of the MH games is crafting armor sets from the monsters you kill and becoming more powerful to take on stronger monsters. If you find yourself getting one shot by something, that's a sign you need to go farm an armor set of your choice, and if that concept doesn't appeal to you, then I'm afraid to say the game isn't for you.

the hunter armor or w/e it's called, the one i made from hunting great jagrases. im using level 2 or 3 weapons, regular steel or iron or w/e.

so far there is no intuitive way to know what's good against what or how to prep, which is annoying

i felt the same but i'm still pretty early in the game. figured it might get better as i get higher up. i haven't touched it in a week now. but every time i do play i end up picking a new weapon and there's a few i've liked but everything still feels way too weak. even if i upgrade them a few times they still seem way too weak and fights take longer then they should. i only used online once and the dude that joined me was doing like 70 damage a hit while i was doing like 15 with the hammer.

i forget if i killed the anjanath or if i stopped at that fight. i know i was fighting it for awhile and it wasn't even that hard despite all the warnings i heard about it. if i did die it was probably because whatever weapon i picked to use i didn't like.

i'll still try the game some more and it probably would be better if i was able to play it with a friend but i have a few that play but we're all on different times and i barely get any time to play with working so much right now. guess i could try looking in game and see if i can get that to work.

Make sure your armor is upgraded too. Getting a new set wouldn't be a bad idea either (and upgrade that). At that point I had a full Barroth set, which is high defense and also very weak to fire, but I was never one shot by Anjanath. If a monster one shots you, that means you need new/upgraded armor.

After you track a monster a few times, you'll get information about it in your hunters notes. You'll see the weaknesses/resistances, weak points, breakable vs severable, tips about their mechanics, basically all the information you'd need to prep.

You can also change your weapons/armor and grab items out of the chest in camp at any point, so prep isn't even that important. It's not like previous MH games where once your in the field, your stuck with your current inventory until you beat it or quit.
