The Downward Spiral was an ok album, but I've never heard anything from Reznor worthy of all the praise he gets Pretty Hate Machine (debut album) is a classic of diy album making. My favorite is their ep Broken, thats an awesome album. I like select cuts off all their other albums. Downward Spiral is overrated for sure but its well made. But Reznor has better songwriting elsewhere. All his albums are really well produced and thats always been where Reznor has made his money. Consequently Hurt has one of the worst vocal performances on The Downward Spiral as well. But musically, NIN's version is a lot more interesting and layered. The hollow spooky machinery sounds, white noise and the jarring change in volume during the climax of the song really give it a huge amount of atmosphere.
