He was probably "brainwashed" or had that belief driven into him by his parents/mother, since he hasn't really experienced enough of life to form his own opinion on the matter. I wouldn't really hold it against him. Anyway, he seems like a genuinely good guy that ended up with a bit of bad luck and didn't really try to put himself out there or change things and now maybe it's too late for him. I can see why he has low self-esteem, but it would be nice if things could work out for him in the end. He's not really on either extreme side of the spectrum (say from Byron to Tadamoto).
