Opener. Desperation moves are a cheap beginners trap, and the only strategy that works against them is "make sure yoour party is fully healed before the boss gets to xxxx hp"

starting with strongest attack isn't cool, no. It'll either gib everyone or you'll realize that since you can withstand that, the rest of the fight is going to be a breeze. But, it is sometimes effective.
