They have specific legal restrictions in place banning government-funded research on gun violence thanks to NRA lobbying about twenty years ago.

So then if it's a no brainer that having a massive armed populace would be the solution to endemic gun violence, you should support government-funded research into the matter as surely your solution would have to be one of the suggestions they come up with then, right?

We're literally the only major Western country that has systematic and massive amounts of gun violence. If it's nothing more than people are unhinged, don't you think that research into that would be a worthwhile endeavor and, if the end suggestion is additional mental health funding or some other type of social program, that we should look into it?

Seriously, folks that are against this are either "mah guns" posters or straight up trolling at this point. Gun advocates should absolutely be in favor of less gun violence. That's a no brainer.

Investigation is not research.
OSHA goes through data and researches best safety practices, then introduces policy that must be followed.

Edit: they also conduct practical experiments.

In terms of finding out who did the crime, yes. Not in terms of finding out why on a societal level it's happening so often.

And, to use the OSHA example, there's a difference between finding out about one defective ladder in an overall line of working ladders, versus finding a defective flaw in the whole batch. Not investigating gun violence is akin to not investigating why [insert brand and model here] of ladders keep breaking when someone's on them and not doing anything beyond that.

Then you should support studies that would do exactly that.

There are a lot of things between keep things as they are, when it's clearly not work, and taking away your guns.

The most likely of which would be a combination of improving knowledge of guns and improving our capacity to tackle mental health problems.

Banning guns isn't a feasible solution, even if we ignored how difficult it would be to change the the constitution on any of the first 10 which are held in a special esteem.

Plugging your ears and going lalalalal, that is the easiest path to what you don't want. Because if you don't work on a solution, the attempt will be made by non gun owners who do not care about your ability to own a gun and do not understand what someone who legally owns a gun is like.

it never ceases to amaze me how blindly oppositional @Anarchy_Juiblex is in these topics about gun control, it is so weird because he is usually pretty reasonable and has some nuance to his thinking especially about issues like this. I've mentioned it before (because he always brings it up) but I've seen him argue that the reason we don't have more 9/11 style events is that we do things as a government to stop them, which means it is a bad idea to show that lawn mowers kill more people than terrorists. but then this issue that is objectively a much bigger concern than either of those things comes up and he ceaselessly asks, why do we need to do something about it, it doesn't effect most people. But that is also true of 9/11 style terrorism, so why is it that he can see how government policies would work in that case but not in this other, much bigger case? and then he directly compares it to stuff like falling off ladders or whatever, which is just as asinine as comparing terrorism to lawn mower deaths, but he does it without irony or humorous intent.

I change my vote. It should be privately funded not government funded. While it should be a government interest since it affects our well being, government is an entity made up of self individual interest and giving them more money could just be adding fuel to the fire. Whereas private funding theres less of a chance for corrupt self interest to hinder progress because the self interest would be mutual.
