Ive always thought the Trump/Obama got elected, Im moving!!! posts we get every cycle were silly, but Im giving serious thought to it due to the gun violence we have. Its February 15th and weve had 30 school shootings this year. I dont like those odds and the right side of the aisle has long since taken the stance of cant prevent everything, so theres nothing to be done, so I have a hard time believing anythings gonna change...

I dont know, I feel almost irresponsible thinking about putting my kid at that kind of risk just for going to school. I know its still extremely slim odds in the grand scheme, but... 30 shootings in 45 days?

I would feel pretty uneasy trying to raise my kid in an unfamiliar country tbqh

At least in America I'm familiar with the laws, societal and cultural norms, etc. In another country my kid would teach that stuff to me lol

Thats a fair factor. My wife has spent some time in Central Europe and I visited, so maybe around there; though itd have to be somewhere safe, obviously, some of those countries arent which would defeat the purpose.

Which countries in Central Europe don't you consider safe?

I dont claim to be educated enough off-hand to make any declarative statements. I just know spots like Hungary have been dicey for a while, though maybe thats considered more Eastern. I know Germany is at least in some flux as well. Id have to research.

maybe Rwanda.

it's my family's home country, and I'd like for my kids to have a stronger connection to (and hopefully an appreciation) it.

I'd eventually bring them to the US, though.

You know absolutely fucking nothing apparently.

Honestly this is something Ive had arguments with my parents about. They want me to get married and have a kid and I told them I dont want to have a kid in this world. My parents just tell me the worlds always a fucked up place and I should just have a kid. Fucking baby boomers are the worst sometimes.

I'm actually considering moving. I really want to get into an area of law where I'm probably either going to be in southeast Asia or in Europe.

If I get into it I'm probably not ever going to come back....

"in some flux"

Does that translate to you as "I know Germany is a hellhole of terrorism and a den of evil"? Because that's not what those words mean.

Its not in flux though. Its one of the safest, most modern countries on the planet.

All I meant by "in flux" was that it's the subject of some controversy. The main part of my initial statement to take away was what I said; that I outright don't know enough to make any sweeping declarations and I'd need to do more research before commenting on a country being dangerous.

lol.... Those "school shootings" include multiple suicides (once such instance involving an adult in the parking lot of a building), the accidental discharge of a firearm, multiple incidents where nobody was hurt, etc. It's propaganda meant to hype a problem where it's not a realistic concern for anybody. Students are at a far higher risk of dying due to an alcohol-related issue than *any* kind of gun violence but nobody is talking about alcohol.

If you're worried about risking your child in a public school, the greatest threat might be the abysmally low level of education given to American students.

There are kids who drown in toilet bowls. Does that mean that it's a prevalent threat people need to think about on a daily basis? The fact that somebody *could* die from an extreme outlier isn't particularly meaningful given the odds. Conceivably you may have more to worry about lightning than school shootings.

A student is far more likely to commit suicide or die from an alcohol-related event than as the victim of a mass shooting in a school. The stuff that makes the biggest headlines aren't necessarily the things you most need to worry about.
