I never liked rap growing up, and I never listened to it. The only time I did, and what consequently introduced me to my taste in the genre later on, was the soundtrack to Thrasher: Skate and Destroy.

It seems like the key to becoming a successful rapper is to stop maturing at 15. A lot of the songs have lyrics that read like a teen writing in his notebook during detention or study hall.

It's so ridiculous that you can barely even parody it. Similar to pretending to be an extremist, people can't tell.

Listen to the shit. A song that says pussy, money, weed over and over. That hilariously stupid Smell Your Dick song. I wouldn't be surprised to hear any of the joke songs from The Boondocks on the air.

another thing to note here is how a lot of these people badmouthing hip-hop and rap are so content talking about it as though it's a one-note genre

whereas metal and rock to them are these robust, versatile, intellectual genres that push the boundaries of music

do you see the difference here

it's almost like they inherently believe some people are just incapable of more complex thought or something

my brother go read the lyrics to a mos def album come back and tell me he stopped maturing at 15 lmfao

I might have thought that when I was younger, but it's dumb to think that any one genre is inherently more culturally rich or intelligent. Save for Classical music. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart...all of that stuff I would legitimately consider on a level beyond modern music.

i do agree sometimes you really have to read the lyrics and listen to songs again and again to get it sometimes

at first i couldn't but then i heard this song by Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar something just clicked for me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP9V83QsmbE

ab-soul has pretty cheesy rhymes but he does it real smartly
and then listen to kendrick's verse
his mastery of cadence is what makes him stand out - and he retains lyrical quality through it all
how many people are actually able to write this way, measuring rhythm and words perfectly to create music without singing

you have to keep in mind so many things
a guitarist has his little whammies and twangs he can do to make his music unique right
a rapper can do the same with his words, stretching words to create rhyme and rhythm, catchphrases, internal rhyme schemes

A lot of bands, if not most, play their own music as well. I guess with current rappers, you could say that they know how to work the auto-tune. How can you be a legitimate music artist if you cant sing and you dont how to play any instruments?

I do like Busta Rhymes, though. He has a distinct sound and energy, a passion, to the way he performs a rap, which I dont see anyone else being on par with. There are some really good writers in rap, too.
