I was just playing that.

What weapons and charms are you using?

I started a new game yesterday after a few days of being stuck, made better purchase choices, breezed through World 1 in 45 minutes and got past one of the bosses I was stuck on in World 2.

The normal peashooter and the extra heart charm or the invincible dash >_>

Ditch the extra heart charm. Use the dash upgrade, buy the charge shot.

The lobber weapon makes certain bosses so much easier.

Also invisible dash basically breaks the game

Extra heart is more useful in most stages if you haven't beaten the game yet. If you go for S-Ranks later, ditch the heart then for other items.

Some weapons are definitely better suited to certain bosses, but the majority of the difficulty just comes down to pattern memorization.

Also, just a thing I did but I found that changing the shoot button mapping to RT and dash to LT helped a lot.

Practices makes perfect, as does restrategizing. I've found myself lost on certain bosses, then changed up weapon and/or charm and suddenly it's a like a different fight.

I've beaten it in regular and bought everything. In expert, I still haven't beaten the robot, King Dice or Devil (and I've yet to passive the Isle 3 Run n Guns). As for S-rank, I've only done the first 2 bosses (mostly B- to A- ranks in expert). I only beat King Dice the first time (regular) by fluke with an accidental glitch, but redeemed myself several weeks later by beating him the legit way at my buddy's house.

My main issues were that I relied to heavily on heart charms and Chaser at first, but I feel like that was necessary to really learn and progress, but now I'm more comfortable with all weapons and changing charms for the situation. Smoke dash is great, and crucial for some things. If you're going for S-rank, it's definitely the best option because score hinges upon not getting hit, so hearts offer no benefit.

Passive-clearing the run n guns is it's own interesting rabbit hole too. The funhouse was one of the most equally frustrating, fun and gratifying experiences in the game. I never want to try to do that again just for the sake of doing it, but the idea of doing it again to show off... that really puts a sinister grin on my face lol.

Don't shoot a single bullet (you can kill by parrying though) in a run and gun.

as others have said, the Dash Upgrade makes the game significantly easier. it's possible to beat every boss without taking a hit without the upgrade but it's a LOT easier to dodge with it on.

as for weapons, i found the Charge Shot to be the most useful because it's incredibly powerful and aiming isn't really difficult most of the time. it can defeat a boss phase in like 6-8 hits. i also liked Spread quite a bit and would use it anytime I could get close enough.

make sure you get the Super Arts from the mausoleums as well, the starting one you get is pretty weak.

Also depends on the boss to some extent. While smoke bomb is generally easier, there are some bosses where it actually makes things harder (notably the toads, the dragon and king dice, but only king dice, smoke bomb makes 3 of his minibosses a cakewalk) and it's better off having coffee and building up your supers faster. I find sugar makes S ranking the final boss (and ironically almost a necessity for the toads since they don't throw shit at you) significantly easier too. Of course for plane bosses you should practically always have coffee on.

really? i found the invincibility one especially useful for certain situations and the 3rd one does more damage if you land the hits, i thought?

I'm not good with the 3rd one. I haven't tried the 2nd one on bosses, but I use it in all the run n guns and it helps for passive.

Invincibility is really good too but it's harder to use since it lasts very short and you might not be able to take advantage of all the time you could to use it (such as if the boss runs around or into the background a lot or if you're using weaker weapons).
As someone who's tried the get the most out of the third one, it's extremely extremely impractical and it's mainly only good on the final boss, and even then you could easily fuck up with it.

The invincibility dash is great once you know the boss patterns and can time it properly (best item for S-runs, IMO), but it's not that helpful for a first playthrough when you don't know what to expect yet. I'd recommend the heart/double heart as the go-to in most cases, swapping this for the other items when you replay the game.

On the weapon site, you should be much aggressive at mixing it up. Every weapon has some boss that it's best suited for.

i used it on the train boss and a few others. but yeah it is hard to use.

i just read up on this a bit and apparently, as far as DPS goes, using five EX moves is more powerful than using any of the SAs. TIL

Yeah, I tend to just start spamming EX moves when I get to four cards (supers are still useful for a lot of situations so I don't want to completely forgo them). Some are harder to hit though. Also, there's one extremely powerful trick for people aiming for S ranks and that's to have a slower rate of fire weapon like the lobber and a rapid fire like roundabout and spamming the switch weapon button. It's what people use for speedruns too. Downside is that you actually start killing too fast with that method and you might not be able to get the required parries for S rank.

@ImTheMacheteGuy is that what you meant?

Yeah that's right. It's clearing without shooting. I think you can maybe still kill enemies with the whetstone? (Charm that makes it so you can parry on anything and deal damage). I'm not sure on that. I've tried it but never successfully completed a level with it to confirm what rank I get. Basically, the incvincibilty can help you get by minibosses without shooting more easily. Even with smoke dash, some are so wide, you have to time it perfectly not to get hit.
