You had loads of promise in the Ezio trilogy, I remember being uber hyped to see how it's handled, then then AC3 fucks it all up by turning it into a 2012 doomsday scenario and killing off Desmond

AC4 was a nice little breather, but Unity completely ignored the story and Syndicate was just some random Assassin hijinks. Origins finally realized we needed a new modern-day protagonist but I'm not sure if that has any staying power past that game

At least they're out of obvious ideas for historical set pieces for now

I honestly think that was the goal until they made it yearly. Hell, AC3 still could've and should've been the modern one!

The last game with Desmond in it had some interesting ideas. But it should have been modern day open world featuring him as the only playable character.

Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, and Syndicate all had some important modern day story parts, they just weren't laid out as plainly as they were in Desmond's story.

It was actually a sensible approach, if you think about it. So many "fans" bitched about Desmond and the modern day story anyway. The way they did it, players didn't really have to sit through those parts anymore, but there were still plenty of hints about what was happening for those that cared enough to pay attention.

Spoilers for those four games:
Juno escaped the Precursor site at the end of AC3, then hacked herself into Abstergo's systems. She reincarnated her husband in 4, then used Abstergo's Helix system in Unity and Syndicate to gather more power for herself. By playing those two games, we became in-universe characters that were contributing to the Helix and to Juno. At the end of Syndicate, she's powerful enough that Abstergo is about to attempt reviving her with the Shroud.

What they did in 4 was clear, but the fact that they essentially turned the modern-day plot into "references references REFERENCES" in the subsequent games makes me feel like they're not committed to it as they were before

Just unlocking "the Truth" in AC2 was fucking great, as cliche as the actual truth was

Well, the Ezio trilogy tied things together.

Do the other games actually need it? I feel like everything is pretty self contained aside from the dumb modern story.

I mean, what else would expect? The loudest fans were the ones bitching about Desmond and the modern day stuff with every release. I don't blame them for just taking the "fuck it" approach.

And what made AC2's The Truth thing so interesting for me was that it was still a mystery. Brotherhood and AC3 didn't have the surprise factor going for them as much.

Honestly only liked the modern story in the first game. It was a good twist to start and I loved the mystery behind everything and the little nuggets of info you got when you went back to the modern world. It became ridiculous in II, though I liked the ending.

I know that feeling

In BlazBlue I was a Mu-12 main but I really wanted to play as Izanami

Then I finally got Izanami and she was in a rushed game without the amazing English dub she had while she was nonplayable

Such a disappointment

Ironically enough I'm a Karin main and moreso after I met her VA

They could have easily been integrated if you wanted Watch Dogs to be an Assassin's Creed game. Dunno what you'd be leaping into though.

There's no overarching plot without the modern day which means there's really no point to the series. Why is there a hidden war between the Templars and the Assassins? Why do the Templars even exist? Why does this random point in history matter? Because without the modern day story it doesn't make sense to keep the sci-fi aspect.

She's typically voicing more reserved characters

As a voice actor myself I aspire to reach that level of playing against type lol

Originally Ass Creed III was meant to be completely set in modern day and you'd play as Desmond (who learns to be an Assassin because of the whole bleeding effect)

Ass Creed III would have been the last game in the series.

Of course Ubi$oft didn't this because they wanted to milk the series for as long as possible which is why the original director left and we got a fuck load of Ass Creed games.

but... does it really need the modern part for any of that is what I'm saying. I think they could have just crafted a cool story within their timelines just fine.

In retrospect I really liked AC3.

Sure it was overhyped but once you got past the overly long intro it really did live up to most of it....in the historical segments anyway.

I hope they do a remaster soon

Black Flag is one of the best in the series though it doesn't quite have something from 3 that I can't figure out

Youre not alone...

Im kinda hoping that with them ACTUALLY adding a fully 3d playable character (unlike the ghost like stuff of 4 and Rogue) with a VA that this means they will put a bit more into the next one...

But i can be hopelessly optimistic...

You can explain those without using the modern day story. Have one of the past characters teach another past character about it.

Why does this random point in history matter?

They represent moments where an Assassin group are about to fall, or the rise of a master.

You're not even an Assassin for literally half the game, Connor is extraordinarily wooden and Ezio has nothing to do with that, the viewpoints didn't even unlock the whole map, worst setting for parkour, and the admittedly very good Homestead missions and story were optional.

Did you know Asassin's Creed was originally supposed to be a spinoff of this? It was going to be about assassins protecting the prince before it was reworked as its own thing.
