Why not binge watching TV?
Why not shopping for fun?
Why not gardening??

Considering the business makes more than almost any other market in terms of hobbies, they're doing just fine.

Honestly, it's just a few idiots making a lot of noise about the "worth". Most regular people love video games.

It's not much different than watching TV, it's just that television has a much broader appeal.

and that's the entire point of free time: you get to spend whatever shit do you want to do. you want to kill bunch of people? sure! just fucking deal with the consequences! you want to drive your car into a train! fucking do it! you're free to do it!

play videogames all night? YES! it is YOUR TIME i dont have any business. i hate that people judge other because they spend all weekend playing videogames. nobody should be forced to adhere society's idiotic rules. if you enjoy it, it is not a fucking waste of time. you know what? nothing we do matter. you will die, everyone will, the universe will crumble into a space dust where not even a trace of our civilization will remain when the sun turn into a red giant, so while we're alive just fucking do whatever shit you enjoy.

i find it frustrating for whatever reason people are so reluctant to understand this concept

is he supposed to not have fun ever and hate life working and studying all the time? wtf is up with some people

It is one of the more time consuming hobbies.

Most hobbies wind up taking 1-2 hours a day, a couple days a week and still make good progress.

Games are striving more and more for that 100 hours post. Not exactly something you can manage in a few hours a week.

Also it's still kinda the newest one, so it gets crap for that.

Books were a giant waste of time until radio came along.

The Television came along and that was a big waste of time. People likened watching television to brain control.

I suppose social media would be the next step, but can you really criticize social media while on social media?

Video games arent something you can brag about.

-Playing a musical instrument
-Owning a nice garden
-Singing
-Writing
-Painting
-Going for hikes

Most of these activities bring value to your life. Video games ruin your eye sight and dont do anything for you. Youre literally wasting your life.

Gaming is like reading a book or watching a movie. Theres no end product other than possibly thought provocation in your own mind. Its simple soul food for the imagination.

It just has that negative connotation to it that books and movies dont.

The games which would even be close to comparing to those activities are few and far between
When you play a game daily | it's likely that you're not playing some thoughtprovoking masterpiece of storytelling
It's usually grinding some crappy game for lootboxes | shooting people online | running over people in GTA | grinding some ingame activity to get stronger or to finish the game
I do believe honing your skills in a fighting game is pretty cool | Or playing strategy games makes you smarter but that's about it for benefits
I think most games do us more harm than good

Acting snobbish is not an answer. Answer the question or don't post.

I tend to read nonfiction books if the subject matter interests me. However, books are put on a stupid pedestal. There are great books, but a lot of useless stuff too that are there merely for entertainment just like everything else. Reading Twilight doesn't make you any better than watching it.

Gaming is the only hobby I have where if I do it I just can't get over the fact that I could be doing just about a million more important things with my time. I could sit there and binge watch TV in the same amount of time and never get that feeling. It's weird as hell and I can't explain it.

Videogames are more productive than tv and movies.

At least more cerebral videogames force you to actually think and absorb information. Although with map markers, magic gps and stuff this is rare and alot of AAA cater to the braindead segment of society that hates thinking.

You're wrong on that though | If you're watching any sort of entertainment that involves storytelling | Your brain will have to be actively engaged to enjoy the experience
You will have to pay attention to names, faces, location,s, etc
Then you have to unconsciously connect dots to understand the story, and the most important part of all is that your brain will try to extrapolate some meaning from what you're watching, while in a game, your brain is busier with your performance to waste time thinking about what is going on in the story

Why would someone waste time writing, if they feel that there is already another post in the topic that accurately describes their thoughts on the subject?

It is the same with alot more depth with real videogames.

Like finding water chip in fallout. Or the quests in morrowind. Like you have to pay attention to landmarks, talking to people, you have to actually investigate stuff.

But the recent trend of following quest marker and other crutches has made videogaming dumber than it should be.
