I was able to actually file for free, both federal and state! TurboTax always charges me for both and I end up paying like $60 or so.

My refund was also higher with H&R Block because it let me itemize my property tax shit.

I've never had to pay for TurboTax. They kinda bait you with their subscription thing but if you skip it you won't have to pay a fee. Why did you pay?

I find it hard to believe Turbotax doesn't have the same option.

I used On-line Taxes and paid like $15 when TurboTax was charing like $130 for my return last year. Really should shop around and save money as the big names are basically "free" until you file the state.

TurboTax has never charged me. They always try to get me to pay by saying I'll have to re-enter my information if I pick the free option. Like oh no I forgot my address and personal info, help me TurboTax!

Well for one thing, it's not offered at all on the free version. They would get me to upgrade to "deluxe" or whatever they call it for $35 to be able to do this, but then I also didn't know how to actually do it. HR Block has it in their free version and just walked me through it real easily.

Fuck H&R block.

One year I only got back $1.25 back from working all year. I didn't owe any dept that year and somehow I end up with that. That was the last year I filed taxes with them.

Turbotax has two versions they claim are free. One is legitimately free for people under a certain income that the government mandates they offer. The second is one they try to advertise and attract attention to that isn't actually free.

"What was not evident is that TurboTax actually has two free products with distinct eligibility criteria. There is the Federal Free Edition, which is available through the company website and is the top result if you search for "TurboTax free file" on Google. There is also TurboTax Freedom Edition, which can be accessed through a nesting doll-like set of links from an IRS.gov page or by clicking here. It is not listed among TurboTaxs online products."

Ok? It would have been the same anywhere else... I owed like $150 on just my work W2. If you got $1.25 back then that means you were paying pretty much exactly the right amount of taxes.

That's actually a good thing. When taxes roll around the ideal situation is to get $0 back. That means that you got the max amount in your checks that year, they didn't take too much, they didn't take too little.

That's ideal. You got the maximum out of your checks without offering interest free loans to Uncle Sam.

Exactly

It kinda amazes me how many people don't understand how taxes work and "why" they are getting money back / owing money.

I always calculate my taxes before actually doing them and my calculation ends up being almost right on the money every single time.

I pay 29.99 via turbotax...it's not like 30 bucks is gonna cause me to lose my house or something.

If you're getting a decent return why would paying 30 bucks piss so many off so much?

Well if we're being honest the Government should have a place for us to file our taxes easily and for free but companies like TurboTax lobby against it because they want that $$$.

A decent refund you mean? >_>

I mean, why pay $30 when I can pay $0 for a better service?

Also this entire industry changes next year...
