I like imagine the only thing Sessions knows about any type of drugs is from Reefer Madness, and anytime someone tries to explain something to him, he just plugs his ears with his fingers and starts saying, "la la la la la la" until they walk away.

It really depends on the injury, illness, or situation. I seriously doubt Sessions would tell a stage iv cancer patient to "tough it out with just aspirin."

They really twisted his words, he isnt wrong. Doctors are prescribing oxycodone for pretty much every break and sprain and cut.

If you think overprescribing pain killers isnt a big contributor to the opioid epidemic, you have no idea what you are talking about.

He's right though.

Thats how the epidemic got so bad because doctors would prescribe it for all pain instead of just the more high level pain.

Before we call him an idiot let's pay attention to this part of the article because I know none of you actually read it.

He pointed at weed use as a path toward opioid addiction, although most research shows that heroin use often starts with prescription abuse.

Okay now we can call him an idiot.

Here's an example of German doctors and surgeons not prescribing powerful sedatives:

"I brought up the subject of painkillers with my gynecologist weeks before my surgery. She said that I would be given ibuprofen. Is that it? I asked. Thats what I take if I have a headache. The removal of an organ certainly deserves more.

Thats all you will need, she said, with the body confidence that comes from a lifetime of skiing in crisp, Alpine air.

I decided to pursue the topic with the surgeon.

He said the same thing. He was sure that the removal of my uterus would not require narcotics afterward. I didnt want him to think I was a drug addict, but I wanted a prescription for something that would knock me out for the first few nights, and maybe half the day.

With mounting panic, I decided to speak to the anesthesiologist, my last resort.

This time, I used a different tactic. I told him how appalled I had been when my teenager was given 30 Vicodin pills after she had her wisdom teeth removed in the United States. I am not looking for that, I said, but I am concerned about pain management. I wont be able to sleep. I know I can have ibuprofen, but can I have two or three pills with codeine for the first few nights? Let me remind you that I am getting an entire organ removed.

The anesthesiologist explained that during surgery and recovery I would be given strong painkillers, but once I got home the pain would not require narcotics. To paraphrase him, he said: Pain is a part of life. We cannot eliminate it nor do we want to. The pain will guide you. You will know when to rest more; you will know when you are healing. If I give you Vicodin, you will no longer feel the pain, yes, but you will no longer know what your body is telling you. You might overexert yourself because you are no longer feeling the pain signals. All you need is rest. And please be careful with ibuprofen. Its not good for your kidneys. Only take it if you must. Your body will heal itself with rest.

As a hospital pharmacist who works in the orthopedics department where opioids are prescribed like candy, I'm siding with Sessions on this one. In fact, we just revised our pain order set to a multimodal approach where opioids are no longer the default meds.

About half of opioids prescribed for postoperative pain aren't even used, leading to lots of leftover meds that could lead to abuse and diversion. You can (and should) start with NSAIDs and Tylenol for most acute pain - even after minor surgery or dental procedures.

What Jeff Sessions said is nothing out of the ordinary for a conservative.

This is a classical example in how liberals and conservatives see issues and solutions differently.

Conservatives see problems as personal.

Liberals see problems as structural.

Liberals analyze problems at a societal level rather than an individual level and conservatives push personal responsibility that is often mislabeled as selfishness. As you can imagine this irritates both sides because it neglects their way of thinking

I'm not really mad about the statement itself as overprescribing opioids for outpatient procedures is a thing. It's moreso the marijuana connection and overall lack of knowledge on both topics that rubs me the wrong way

Republicans the party of personal responsibility lol. If that was true they wouldnt believe this crisis exists as its individuals cuasing their own problems screw them. Lol they are the party of conformity where if you dont conform to their standards you are a waste of space. They dont care about the individual or personal responsibility.
