Job that you actually got paycheck or direct deposit from.

farm work for your family or work where you got paid under the table because you were legally too young to work, doesn't count.

Eh, depends.

It's definitely an avenue with value but there's so many other possible ones as well. They could be into music, sports, doing other random shit with their friends.

I mean, I didn't necessarily *need* to work when I did, but holding down a part-time job during high school and college really helped with my work ethic.

Plus having any work experience makes finding a job post college that much easier.

Nah. I worked because I wanted to gain life values and work ethic. My first summer job at 15 was so I could earn money for a SNES. My dad said save half and he'd pay the other half. I made more than enough that $75 wasn't that hard. When I got it though he bought the SNES himself. He just wanted to learn to save and to appreciate things and not just always have stuff handed to me.

Basically this. Just because mommy and daddy will pay your living doesn't mean you shouldn't be working. Most all my friends had jobs in college whether they needed em or not.

Also I wouldn't hire anyone if they had never had a job before. I'm not saying you need 10 years in a field but if you're looking for a job and just got your degree I wouldn't take someone who never worked before.

Yeah, but several people have already said they didn't work early out of necessity. The way you worded your original statement, you seemed to have implied that no one works if they don't have to.

Not true, and arguably not smart. I still participated in sports and other hobbies despite holding down a job and attending school and college. No need to be defensive about being lazy.

I had a paper route when I was 11 or 12 and I was, in fact, legally on the books and got a formal paycheck that I had to cash. I'm guessing it varies by where you live (in the U.S. it likely varies state-to-state) but you can legally work under the age of 14 in at least some U.S. states. The laws probably put stricter limits on working hours and working conditions at younger ages. Paper routes for weekly papers require only a few hours of work one day a week and your working environment is just a residential neighborhood.

The next job I had after that was at 16.

They can do whatever they want. Mastering an instrument is awesome.

It doesn't have to be relevant work experience. I just personally would never hire someone who hasn't worked a job. In my experience the older they get without a job the crappier they seem to be as employees. Learning how to work, how to be professional, how to own your shit, how to be responsible, how to be recognize your roll are important skills. Kids take to them quick. Older people who have never worked don't seem to.

I didn't have to work when I was a kid. My parents would have covered everything. I had a great youth and am glad I learned to be an adult.
