Hmm good point. I do own that game. Had it for a long time actually. I played it a bit when I first got it and then again a year or two later, but never got around to beating it. Not sure why I quit and didn't get back to it again.

Valdis Story is one of the first games I got on Steam like 4 years ago. Haven't played it since. Maybe I should get around to replaying it someday.

Going back through as one of the other characters gives it a pretty drastically different feel because combat priorities are pretty different.

By the way, does anyone have other suggestions for similar-ish games?

Hollow Knight and Rogue Legacy are amongst my favorite platform/action games on Steam.
I already have Ori on my wishlist, waiting for a decent sale to get it.

Momodora: Reverie which was suggested is good
Dead Cells is a metroidvania with a roguelike element to it
Valdis Story is probably the most pure "metroidvania" of the modern genre and has tons of replay value.
Dust: An Elysian Tail - a good game if you can stand furries
Axiom Verge - VERY "classic" Metroid feel
Rogue Legacy - another roguelike
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - the other games are more traditional stage-based platformers, but this one in particular has backtracking
Guacamelee
Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap - a NES remake with "stages" but in one world
Cave Story
Owlboy
After Death

No Aquaria love?

Eventually the game will put icons on your map of the major places you need to go. If that hasn't happened yet, and when all else fails... down is usually the way to go.

i'll second Valdis Story, Guacamelee and Dust, those were all good. also check out Apotheon if you want a Greek mythology themed one that's fun but not amazing.

to make up for the lack of custom map pins i've just been keeping notes on things. i have a section for places where i need to jump higher, one for places where i need to break shaking ground, etc.

not sure i've ever played a metroidvania that allowed custom pins/markers now that i think about it. keeping notes is something i've done while playing these for a while. i grew up during NES days, taking notes is something i've just done during games with large worlds.

I haven't done the crimson troupe dlc though i've started it but i've done a lot

https://puu.sh/zkYtN/dfc7000d59.png

ama and tag me if you might need help, though a lot of it is fuzzy. i'm waiting for the next dlc which is supposed to be soon, and i might play through it again.

edit: if you didn't know, you can "overcharm" by utilizing more more slot than you have

before: https://puu.sh/zkYAG/8ed6493ae0.png
after: https://puu.sh/zkYBI/bbfc6e4949.png

you take extra damage in this state however. risk vs reward.

You take double damage over-charming. There really isn't a practical reason to ever be doing it, but, if you are going to do it, have the last charm be something that uses a lot of notches. Once you're over, you're over, so that last notch can be used for a 2-notch charm just as easily as a 5-notch one.

Also, with the new DLC, the highest completion percentage is 106%.

Correct, you can only get one of the charms in a single playthrough.

IMO, neither of them are particularly useful in a late-game loadout, so don't fret about deciding based on that. However, I personally think the second boss that you fight when going the ritual route is the most interesting (and hardest) in the game, so I'd recommend at least giving that fight a try. If it's too hard/frustrating, the banishment option is always available. Each route gives you a separate achievement also.

so my biggest (and only real) gripe with the game so far is there is a LOT of backtracking and going through areas I've already been due to lack of shortcuts and fast travel.

for example, i was exploring Deepnest and found the tram pass, so i decided to see where that took me. i went over to the area to use the item, explored the next two areas a bit until i got stuck and decided to head back to town. it took me a good 15 minutes to walk all the way back to the transportation, then starting from the bottom of Deepnest I had to work my way all the way up to the 'main' level, then over to the Mantis Lords, then up through that area and finally to the travel location.

if you could travel between benches it would be perfect.

There is an immediate fast travel item you get at some point, for which you can set your own waypoint.

Also, there's a Stag's Station in Deepnest, so you shouldn't have had to backtrack that long.

do you mean the one on the far left side of the map, on the upper-right corner of the abandoned village? i did find that one, but for some reason i thought it was actually faster to just go up through the forgotten wastes. perhaps that was a mistake.

Just finished my speedrun -- final time of just under 4 hours.

It wasn't really too hard other than the Watcher Knights, which I spent about 25 minutes of the run preparing for. The old achievement was under 3 hours, which would have been ridiculous.

All I have left is the Steel Soul runs, which I don't think should be too hard barring carelessness.

Once you know the game, the 20 hour at 100% achievement is not hard at all. You can play the game very leisurely and make that. Would have still been easy if it were 10 hours.

The 5 hour speedrun is only difficult because you're forced to be under-powered for some boss fights, which can really hold you up if you die a few times. This achievement used to be 3 hours, which was incredibly hard and left almost no room for error if you died.

i really enjoyed it. gave it a 4/5.

it's similar to HK in that it's a 2D action/platformer but with more RPG elements (you build a character) and less exploration / backtracking to find stuff.

STR builds dominate
