i think im near the end of the first area. i just found the bench and unlocked the shortcut to the top. i see what looks like a boss room on the map very close to me but i haven't gone that way yet.

really like the atmosphere and the music so far. really like the sense of exploration as well .the jump mechanics seem a bit 'floaty' though and i hear the platforming gets intense later, so im not sure about that. haven't had any troubles yet, i haven't died once.

It's such a great game, the atmosphere really helps you get into it. It was definitely my game of the year last year. Took me around 25-ish hours to beat (not 100%,but close enough, missing a few sidequest I didn't bother with after beating the game)

Really? I didn't think it was that difficult, at least not in the mandatory areas. It was more difficult if you tried to access some optional sidequest areas. Like that white castle place. That was the worst platforming area but it's pretty much endgame content.

Yeah.. The white castle or palace, the place with all those saws. But even then, with a little practice it wasn't that bad.

God yes. Platformers should never be played with the keyboard, if you have the option of using a controller.

well, im only about one hour into the game so it's hard for me to make an assessment right now. i do enjoy what i've seen thus far, though.

when the game starts up there is a screen saying "a controller is recommended" and since i prefer controllers anyway i went with one. i haven't even tried using kb/m

Souls is not a platformer though, even then this game is not nearly as hard as they make it sound, it's almost like they never touched a mario game in their lives.

There's only 1 truly difficult platforming part in the game and its optional...

You get several abilities that make movement and platforming a lot easier. I wouldn't judge the controls based on your initial jumping alone.

There is only one area of the game that I'd say has intense platforming, and it comes near the end. Even most of that difficulty that can be mitigated by using a certain charm.

i remember you giving the game a lot of praise not that long ago. i too love the genre and your recommendation (and reasoning behind it) is one reason i moved it to the top of my queue.

and yeah, i expect to at least get a double-jump or a wall-jump because i've already seen things indicating that. i also hope i get some dodge mechanic or something.

Yeah, like others have said... the platforming is relatively easy the entire game, except in an optional late game area. The difficulty curve is tied to the combat. Personally, I died A LOT to some of the bosses and felt incentivized to explore for items that would make me stronger.

The boss fights in the game are generally challenging, but not annoyingly difficult or unfair. If you're getting your ass handed to you, you can usually just explore a bit more and return later. The game is very non-linear and allows you to beat most of the bosses in pretty much any order.

after beating the first boss (on my first try, wooooo!) i ventured off to the left because i figured they gave me the ability to pew-pew and allowed me to exit right next to one of those armadillo dudes that i need the pew-pew to beat for a reason.

i wish there were more frequent shortcuts / teleports back to town, though. after beating the first boss i had something like 500+ geodes and made it to the first bench in the next area without seeing a way back to town. but i kept going and eventually died. after going back to get my bloodstain i decided to go all the way back to town to spend my geodes on the last remaining map pins.

i figure there's a teleport / fast-travel place like one room after where i was at <_<

Yeah that can suck, but it's all part of the fun and thrill. You die, you lose something, but if you get back to where you died without dying again, you get it back.
I died stupidly on my way back to my ghost more than once because I trid to get there too fast and wasn't careful enough. You get plenty of money so unless you lose like.. A LOT.. you'll be fine. Just be sure to buy the charm that acts as a geode magnet. Kill stuff and move on without bothering to collect what falls down.

Playing around with charm combos is one of the most fun parts of the game. I agree with the Gathering Swarm charm (picks up geo for you) as being one of the best exploration charms. It's only 1 slot, so very modest cost for the convenience.

They're very different. Ori is a platformer first and an action game second. Hollow Knight is an action game first and a platformer second. If your favorite part of Ori was the movement, HK is going to seem underwhelming, but if you felt Ori wasn't a challenge when fighting enemies, HK would be your jam.

Momodora: Reverie which was suggested is good
Dead Cells is a metroidvania with a roguelike element to it
Valdis Story is probably the most pure "metroidvania" of the modern genre and has tons of replay value.
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Axiom Verge
Rogue Legacy
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
Guacamelee
Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap
Cave Story
Owlboy
After Death

Those three games seem interesting, but they've all been in development for so long :/ Death's Gambit is the one that seems the best out of the three, I'll definitely wishlist it and wait and see how it is once it comes out, especially if you say it's supposed to come out soon

Dust: An Elysian Tail - a good game if you can stand furries

Already own both. Good games though I really enjoyed both. Have Dust twice (on 360 and Steam)
Valdis Story is one of the first games I got on Steam like 4 years ago. Haven't played it since. Maybe I should get around to replaying it someday.
Axiom Verge - VERY "classic" Metroid feel

Saw that game around before.. Never bothered getting it, maybe I should, it seems fun enough.
Rogue Legacy - another roguelike

Already own -and love- that game ;)

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - the other games are more traditional stage-based platformers, but this one in particular has backtracking

Hmm I'll look it up ;) Guess I never really checked out that series because of the.. cartoonish fan serviceness look of it, to put it that way.
Guacamelee

Own it already, great game :)
Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap - a NES remake with "stages" but in one world

Hmm interesting I'll check it out.
Cave Story

Own it already ;) (heck I had played it way long ago when it was free online)
Owlboy

Looked it up when it came out, didn't seem like one I'd enjoy..
After Death

Never heard of that one before, it seems to have a Castlevania feel to it.
