And don't point to hospitals not keeping their shit up to date as some sort of case for this, hospitals are a shitty conglomeration of some random corporation buying a building and not knowing anything about a business, cheap ass management that has run a business but doesn't know shit about nursing, pharmacy, patient needs, or technology, and the medical staff. IT is never factored in except for a last ditch "ah fuck" moment where some contractor comes in and fixes the printer.

I mean, for the most part, Microsoft has done a really good job rolling out security patches. So why are Windows machines notoriously vulnerable?

It's because users put off updating indefinitely. Taking that away was the best thing Microsoft could have done to increase the security of their systems. You don't like it because it inconveniences you, not because it's a bad feature. And it wouldn't inconvenience you if you didn't just keep clicking "install at a later date" and then selecting the latest option, rather then actually scheduling a time that works for you.

The largest security threat in any given system is the end user sure, but this doesn't fix the problems you think it does. I schedule my updates, my machine updates weekly without my intervention. Average users just get the crippling updates straight out of the gate and can't use their PC until someone who knows computers rolls it back or whatever. It does nothing for enterprise user's because businesses either invest in having a decent IT department or have essentially nothing around, maybe somd guy that is constantly running around fixing problems. You act like Windows 10 is extraordinarily secure when in reality, it's basically the same thing except worse again. It hasn't been out long enough to suffer from really large hacks (though honestly I still think people will migrate to Mac over Windows 10) so there's no reason to have any faith in it at this point. Forced updates are a bandaid on a much larger problem which is the Windows kernel.

can't stand any of the new OS Microsoft has been putting out. Windows XP was the best and it went downhill from there

the only feature I really like is being able to quickly put two windows side by side and have them fill the whole screen

If you only have your computer on while you're using it this doesn't work because some genius decided to remove the "Update and shut down" option.

Yeah I forgot about this point, I don't really care about leaving my computer on.

Let's not pretend it doesn't alleviate the issue. Is it a fix all? Obviously not. Is the way other OSes deal with security much much better? Of course. But a large proportion of insecurity in the population of Windows machines are really simply due to delaying updates.

No, I'm acting like general security is improved when security updates are installed.

And you ignored my point that vulnerabilities will always be there, updates or not. Keeping up to date helps sure but that's not why Windows machines are the most vulnerable.

Do you think that Windows machines would be less vulnerable with less vulnerabilities?

Again, not sure how that relates to corporations refusing to fund proper IT in the first place. Your arguments on this are bad.

Windows 7 is fine with Overwatch. The 32-bit version doesn't work though.

A little, but there are new ones every single day so it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Again, Windows is by and large the most used OS on the planet thus that's what attackers focus the most on.

Seriously dude most security solutions have been in existence for at least a decade, and incompetent/cheap/lazy organizations ignore them. Simple shit like locking your screen or having universal settings. The list seriously goes on forever. Those aren't problems that will be magically fixed with a patch to your OS. And it's relatively few security updates that actually patch major security exploits, especially in proportion to the amount of junk or DRM that gets labeled as an update. Is it any wonder people don't want that shit?

You can change when the updates should be installed, but I forget how. Either way, now Windows doesn't randomly restart to install them, it just minimizes my games by forcing a reminder to appear instead, hurray!

We have two domains at work, one for staff and one for "public" users. I managed to delay having any Windows 10 machines on our staff domain for another year, but I'm about to head up a total migration on our other domain.

Group policy is the thing I'm worried about the most, we don't know what's going to break yet.

Things I hate about Windows 10:
- Windows update is now evil.
- It seems like Windows is always doing something the background without asking.
- Even at the lowest setting, telemetry is gathering WAY too much data.
- Updates continually fuck with your ability to stop data harvesting via telemetry.
- Stuff seems to move around every big update. Pick a consistent design and stick to it, damn it.

I played around with Windows XP in a virtual machine recently and I was surprised at how easy to use it was. Windows was honestly pretty good straight through 7, but after that it was downhill. The weird mobile stuff added to 8 dragged it down, and I hate 10 for the above mentioned reasons. I miss the days when Windows was consistent, stable, recognized the computer was yours (not the other way around!) and didn't gather data from you like you owed it money.
