Spoilers for the book (and presumably the movie, too):

There's a point where the main character completes a quest in the Oasis virtual reality, and the prize for completing it is an item that, when activated, turns into a giant mech which he can pilot and fight with. He's scanning through the options while choosing which one he wants, and the author is informing the reader that "hey, here's an explanation of what some of the other choices are because you might see them pop up again in a chapter or two when other players have chosen them."

The entire book is not like that. And I mean, like the first quarter of The Fellowship of the Ring is boring as fuck but it's still a good book overall.

Seems like a pretty straightforward, simple, and understandable writing decision to me. You'd prefer he stop the story in the middle of the climax and describe each one individually as they appear?

it's almost funny how this is just "i'm going to reference anything and anything i can from the 80's: the book: the movie" and people will go see it because they won't do any research.

some people on /v/ also thoroughly indulged in looking at screencaps from the trailer and saw tracer (overwatch) in it.

I presume because this is set in the future and i assume oasis is like a bigger VR Chat that people can download models to show those characters, so it doesn't throw off the future VR thing and instead makes more sense that people would have models from old games.

but it will still be free marketing for anything anyone can recognize. i can imagine people taking pictures of a vast scene of people in the movie, and people pointing out who they know. it's almost like a free mass marketing discussion, like they know people will try and point out who they know and give any information to anyone who may be interested.

I'd rather he just skip the unimportant info and just tell a coherent story. Everything about this sounds and looks like shitty fanfiction.

Reminds me of the American Psycho book where Bateman has to say the designer for every single product someone is wearing.

This isn't a good defense as I also think LOTR books are pretty awful.

Tolkein is a good world builder and linguist, he was an awful storyteller.

This is both uncreative world building and awful writing.

Yes, they do all appear at a pretty important moment at the climax of the story. And the descriptions aren't exactly "complete breakdowns" either. He describes the main character's choice in decent detail through an internal dialogue type thing, where he's trying to pick between two and weighing which one he liked more. The rest of them basically amount to "oh look, the Voltron mechs! And hey, that's one of the early prototype mechs from the Mobile Suit Gundam series!"

Maybe try reading the book before you bash the author's decisions? I'm not saying it's the next great epic tale or anything, but it's also not trying to be. It's just a fun fantasy romp through 80's nerd/pop culture. Why does it have to be anything more than that? It also happens to lend itself well to the visual spectacle that Hollywood loves, which is why it's getting a movie.

Listening to you guys in this topic makes it sound like if an author isn't attempting to compete with Homer's Odyssey then they're garbage and shouldn't even be bothering. :-|

Sorry you're upset I don't think your book full of references looks good, I'm glad you like it and great that you get a movie of it that you'll probably enjoy too though.

I love the concept of the book and mostly enjoyed it. However there was a lot of bad dialogue, and the writer inserted his liberal politics into it too much for my liking.

That book is the definition of funbad. It's a quick entertaining read....if you go into it expecting anything remotely substantial, you deserve whatever disappointment you come out with.
