Without a 2 week notice? I work at Books A Million located at a mall. The pay is a little above minimum wage in my state which is $8.10 but I make $8.45. Anyways, I've been there for a few months now and I can't stand it anymore. Customers treat you like shit in every retail job, I understand that. However, there is so much bullshit going on with that job. I just can't do it anymore.

You would think it's a book store and I wouldn't being doing too much. Just stocking books, helping people, and ringing out customers, right? Wrong. Employees clean the bathrooms. We mop both the upstairs and downstairs floor. We vacuum, sweep, and dry mop. Management will sometimes give us a tool box to actually build shit. We're asked to push around the elderly. We're asked to sell people membership cards and magazines. The magazines are a huge scam but I won't get into that. We're asked to watch customers and we are to try and stop people from stealing.

There is a lot of stuff I'm leaving out but you guys get the gist. Management is incompetent. There was a time where someone found marijuana on the store floor and management tested every employee in the store that day. Since people come to the store to do drug deals sometimes, it was probably dropped by a dealer or something but nope. It had to be one of the employees! Fucking lame.

Most of my coworkers treat me like garbage. They stereotype me to hell and back. I'm the black guy so I apparently do loads of drugs. I'm also the youngest one working there. I'm 20 and everyone else is over the legal drinking age so I get flak for not being able to drink legally yet. I can tell they look down on me because of the way they speak to me. One of the leads working there is always hounding me over the walkies. As soon as I finish one task she gives me, it's on to the other. One time, the store was dead and I had a seat at my register so I sat down for a few minutes. Other employees have chairs, too so I'm not the only one who sits. This same lead came and took away the chair complaining that I was a slacker even though the other employee at the register is on his phone 24/7.

I have other stories like coworkers giving me their work and taking all the credit for themselves. There are coworkers who are supposed to help me do stuff like mop the floor but instead, go off to chat with other coworkers leaving me to do everything by myself. There's no point in me complaining to management because I'm fairly sure they don't like me very well, either. They blatantly make me work harder than the other employees. One time, myself and two other employees were standing around just talking since the store was dead. Management found out and pulled only me aside to give me tasks. The other two employees got to spend the last two hours just standing the same stop talking.

Today, I have another 8 hour shift from 2pm to 10pm. I just can't do it anymore, CE. I don't have another job lined up right now but I've been sending in applications. I've been told you should only quit when another job is lined up but my college schedule has become a lot more heavier this semester so I'm fine with not having a job for a few weeks. This was my first job so is it usually like this? To give a little more context, we had about 10 people quit within the past month or so.

Get another job lined up and wait. Quit at the exact moment where it'll be the hardest it can be on your coworkers and bosses.

My uncle and a friend of his quit Walmart in the same night when there were 4 trucks to unload and they were the two biggest guys there. Pissed a lot of people off and it was awesome. Fuck that place.

Yeah, quit. It's a dead end job with shit pay. Also, if you keep doing the work your co-workers slack on, get ready to keep doing it. Don't do that

Yeah it's bs but that does sound pretty normal. I've been there. Retail is a miserable nightmare.
Either quit if you don't need the job or just act snarky right back to them all. Don't let your emotions show, don't get angry. Just play dumb and ask things with a confused look on your face like. Why is xxx allowed to sit? Why is it okay for xxx to harass me. Purposely take triple the amount of time to do something and then tell then that it would all get done faster if you had help.
Yes they'll eventually find an excuse to fire you but make their lives miserable while you can.

One of my worst experiences was one I worked for a few years where new owners came in with new management. The absolute incompetence and unrealistic expectations on display was insane. The daily meetings, the buzzwords, the chiding everyone because the store numbers were 0.02% down ytd. Or people were only buying 2 items instead of 3. Oh yeah. That was the job that convinced me that 90% of all management is useless. Absolutely worthless. They stay in the office all day fluffing upper management on conference calls all day talking about percentages that are totally out of anyone's control. We got called into a meeting once at like 6am where our manager and the district manager were acting like disappointed teachers towards us all over there not being enough people entering the store since they keep track via the door sensor. Which btw when you have people your own age or younger acting like idiots and are your bosses, you do not respect them at all. Period.

I managed to shut down that whole meeting by being "difficult" and stopped them mid scolding to point out that it's impossible for us to have any effect on the amount of people that choose to enter our store. And what they should really be questioning is why our brand isn't more appealing. Maybe you need to advertise more. Maybe put on better sales. Maybe give us signage to display in the windows. One way or the other as simple sales associates we would be the last people responsible for any such issue. Omfg the looks on their faces were like they just saw a talking dog. Like "How dare one of them speak to us!" They just stopped, called the rest off and dismissed everyone. To which I asked if we were being paid a full hour for this spectacular waste of time that caused many to have to drive 20+ miles out for and then be sent home.
They hated me. God did they hate me. But the feeling was mutual.

Yeah seems pretty normal for retail. Only like a fraction of the workers actually care and try the rest are lazy/don't give a fuck.

Youre describing most retail jobs and a lot if jobs in general.

A word of advice: stop giving a shit about how other people are treated. Youre there to do work the entire time. If you get called out on not doing that then oh well. Whether someone else gets reprimanded or not doesn't have anything to do with what you're supposed to do. You can shit talk them to your boss once you actually start earning your pay check.

Also, the drug thing just may be company policy if they find drugs on the premises. Testing isn't free so idk why your boss would spend the money unless they had to.

Being treated as a if you're a drug addict is a legit complaint though. That's definitely not cool and is a reasonable reason to want to leave imo.

Anyway, it sounds like you don't have the work experience to weigh this against other jobs. The bottom line is you're not comfortable there so you probably shouldn't stick around. Two weeks notice is not required. They would immediately fire you without notice. Just be aware that you may not like the next place even more.

lol this. Cleaning/sweeping/vacuuming is normal. You'll get that almost anywhere you go at 20.

That said...your coworkers sound super shitty.
