Well duh, this was literally the whole argument for Net Neutrality so ISPs wouldn't take an already scummy concept like data capping to a whole new level like what Google is proposing.

Granted though, they're likely still going to be better than Comcast or Verizon holy fuck @ what those two are capable of.

stream my plex sever but it doesn't use that much data. 8-10 gigs a month on just plex is a regular thing for me, though.

if anyone habitually watches youtube/netflix/hulu/etc on their phone that easily eats up all your bandwidth plus some.

eh. wireless is a different story. it's extremely trivial considering the amount of devices that we have to clog up a tower's bandwidth if everyone was allowed to use data full blast. This makes everyones' service much slower.

This isn't true for wired connections which have insane bandwidth and are restricted over how many people have access to them.

Oh ok so they just joined the club like the other companies. Most unlimited data plans give you a max of 22 GB 4G then throttle or if there is "congestion" they can then throttle your speed at anytime.

With Netflix I just download what I want to watch off wifi and watch it offline. I never use data for it.

Sprint doesn't throttle or cap at all. I've hit 3-4 TBs.

Thing is their service became shit again and you can download something straight for a month and not hit a few GBs. They need more LTE+. My friend's area has it and I was straight up hitting like 190 Mbps. That's better than most cable.

During the early days of northeastern blackout it was virtually impossible to make or receive calls despite the fact that the towers were operational due to battery backups and emergency generators.

the problem was literally everyone in that area picked up their phones and called people at the same time and unintentionally ddos'd the towers.

Google Fiber and Project Fi (what TC is talking about) are two different things you guys... Google Fiber is still gigabit with no cap in the handful of cities they put it in before they ended expansion.
Project Fi is a mobile service that works in tandem with multiple networks I believe, it's $20 base for unlimited calling and texting and then $10 per gig of data up to 6GB where from there everything after that was free. Also if you crossed over into another gig they'd take the $10 but if you didn't use it all they'd give the unused amount back as credit towards your next months bill.
So it was basically an unlimited plan with flexibility could be as low as $30 or as high as $80 for what was pretty much the only remaining truly unlimited data plan left, but now it's $80 gets you up to 15gb which sucks. They also don't limit things like video streaming to 480p like many do, there was no contract, and I believe had free Canada and Mexico calling and roaming as well but I don't remember. I was actually just about to switch to them and get a Pixel XL so I'm glad I know this now so they're out of consideration. The only thing I wanted was unlimited data but since that's gone I'll just get an "unlimited" plan from somewhere cheaper and with a wider selection of phones.

In this case, the tower is hit before a load balancer. It goes to a load balancer after it hits the tower, but it's possible to overload a tower much easier.

You can also overload a load balancer. And if you had a load balancer with infinite bandwidth you could overload connection pools or CPU resources at the servers behind the load balancer.

Companies wouldn't shell out millions of dollars for DDoS protection services a year if there was an easy way you could just "load balance" things for a flat cost.

That's not compensating, that's pure graft. They got a quarter trillion dollars of taxpayer money in the 90s to build required infrastructure and pocketed most of it. Current network capacity only exists because Apple said "fuck you, build it or you don't get iPhones"
