What is hilarious is that just a few weeks ago I was moving some childhood books and I found one of those Berenstain Bears books. And sure enough, it was spelled Berenstain.

Millennials for the most part probably don't even know who Mandela is. More today probably do only because of this effect.
So, back when the effect was coined, it was baby boomers who thought this way.

Instead of stereotyping entire generations of people, why not just blame the idiots who believe this?

it started with someone going "wait, X is like this? i always thought it was like that" and then someone else goes "i also thought it was like this"
and then loads of other people go "we were also under the impression that X was like this"
and finally, they would all just go "that's neat" and carry on with their lives.

then, someohow it turned into "we always thought X was like this, but it's really like that...must be an alternate universe shenanigans mixup"
and conspiracy theories.

i'm not completely convinced the second group of people aren't just joking
