Can someone (Allen?) explain to me how "subdomain of GameSpot" translates to "more revenue to spend on FAQs?"

It's complicated and I'm not the best person to explain it (and really it's more of a "company secret" anyway), but basically it revolves around how internet advertising works.

Hmm... does that mean if somebody clicks an ad on GameFAQs, both GS and GFAQs get credit for the click? Double dipping?

cbsi gets the credit since cbsi is the one that has the partnership.

checks are cut based on revenue from the domain which is easily trackable.

the company secret part is going to be how much goes to GameFAQs vs GameSpot.

No. You can read yoloyoloswagEMP's post above as it touches on some of how it works. It doesn't cover all of the details but it gives you a high level view as to what will be going on. There's a lot more nuance to it, of course, but again it's not really my place to explain how CBS Interactive goes about making money. Nor should it be, of course.

The primary reason for this domain change is to show that as a collective, GameFAQs and GameSpot are the definitive, largest destination for gaming on the Internet. By combining our strengths and hosting the sites on the same domain, we will offer the largest and most comprehensive place to go to for anything gaming. We considered many options on how to get the two sites on the same domain. Ultimately, it made the most sense to have both sites on the GameSpot domain, as it is the flagship CBS Interactive gaming brand, rather than hosting both sites on the GameFAQs domain or even moving both to another new (and unknown) domain.

What fucking idiot came up with this solution?

Using a subdomain means you don't share SEO power, they're still separate entities in the eyes of Google. Hahah CNET is a fucking mess

it's a branding thing. the SEO isn't going to change.

it was decided likely by some dude high up at CBS miles above SBAllen.

Senior Sailor probably isn't happy about this as it's a demotion for him.

Yeah dude, I get the play but I don't see it as their best option.

Speaking as someone that does marketing strategy for a living, I don't see why they don't merge to a single domain to gain backlink power from GameFAQs' website assets. If they're migrating anyways, why the subdomain? What's the advantage?

GameFAQs and GameSpot are two of the most well known video game websites. Why would you want to throw away that type of branding and start over with something brand new like that? That seems like a real bad idea. lol

GameFAQs will now be seen as the inferior GameSpot by casuals, and will wither and die.

Man, SBAllen is really working OT here, trying his best to conceal the fact that he is on a sinking ship.

Ever since I signed up to this site I've seen this:

2003: GameFAQs is dying.
2004: GameFAQs is dying.
2005: GameFAQs is dying.
2006: GameFAQs is dying.
2007: GameFAQs is dying.
2008: GameFAQs is dying.
2009: GameFAQs is dying.
2010: GameFAQs is dying.
2011: GameFAQs is dying.
2012: GameFAQs is dying.
2013: GameFAQs is dying.
2014: GameFAQs is dying.
2015: GameFAQs is dying.
2016: GameFAQs is dying.
2017: GameFAQs is dying.
2018: GameFAQs is dying.

Funny how it hasn't died yet.

It is a really slow death. It will happen eventually and then all those people will be proven right.

Yeah man I'll bet the site will be really hurting by 2045.

To be fair, when people say "Gamefaqs is dying" I don't think they literally mean "It will no longer exist."

They mean the site as is it, as the way they liked it is dying.

Kinda like how Atari still exists. But people who said it was dying during the video game crash, dying when it's consoles flopped and dying when it sank down to only producing games and a lot of those were flopping... Weren't really wrong.

They're just thinking on a different wavelength to you.

A URL we will have to look at all the time. Looks ugly and lowers the quality of my GameFAQs experience.

You look at the URL all the time? That's...really weird. I look at it not at all. And I go to the site by typing "ga" then Enter.

Yes. You got a problem with that?!?

It's kinda weird dude.

It's like going to watch a movie and then spending the entire time looking at girl's feet.

Hey, you're the marketing expert! :)

Which is it then, bruh? What kind of shit are you tryna pull here?

We're not fucking stupid, you're backpedaling.

....you were talking about SEO when I said that.

ITP: SEO is not part of marketing

Quit acting dumb dude, we know what game you're playing at here: damage control.

It's literally the name of the site. It would be like rebranding Pepsi as Pepsi RC because RC sucks so much.

It's the name of the URL.

Not the site.

Serious question: Can you even see/read the url right now while reading this sentence? Or did you have to stop to go check it now?

It could have said "LaraCroftRidesGiraffes/bigmudkips.com.page1454f/?" for all you know until you checked.

Making an argument that the URL is irrelevant is laughable. How many convoluted URLs do you know of that are popular?
