Can someone (Allen?) explain to me how "subdomain of GameSpot" translates to "more revenue to spend on FAQs?"

I don't see how that translates to more revenue in any way whatsoever...

But it also doesn't actively harm gfaqs so seems neutral to me...

Nope, this is incorrect.

I made my statement about the domain move. Like any other business in the world, we make a statement and we don't share every conversation had behind closed doors. I'm answering questions that make sense to answer and ignoring things that I don't see a merit to answering.

It's a neutral, yeah.

My point is that if they're combining the two, why wouldn't they just move to a single domain instead?

I think the goal there is to combine them both to a single domain and still keep the boards separate. One or more parties didn't want to move them to a single domain.

You're saying they couldn't accomplish that without a subdomain?

gamespot.com/gamefaqs wouldn't work?

why would you have that clusterfuck of a URL which, by the way, uses the exact same DNS as gamespot.com thus ruining the search rankings.

How is that a clusterfuck? It's the exact same character length as using a subdomain.

You seriously think that move would ruin rankings? LOL

No it doesn't.

There is the fully-qualified domain to worry about, in this case www.gamespot.com/gamefaqs which is longer than gamefaqs.gamespot.com.

there are also other advantages to using a subdomain such as the ability to use a specialized or wildcard cert for https. as a website within gamespot, you can only use gamespot's cert which means when gamefaqs does something they have to make sure it plays nice with gamespot's cert. That increases SDLC time because you have to coordinate cert changes and deployments with more organizations.

and yes. full domains, TLDs, and subdomains all have priority in rankings over somebull.shit/morebull/shit.aspx?more=bullshit&shit=fromabull

Subdomains vs subdirectories have been a long-standing debate. This won't go anywhere, but I see your point. There's definitely value in a subdomain but this move in particular doesn't make sense to me. Just wish we could get some answers.

What doesn't make sense is subdomain vs sticking with a TLD.

But as I said earlier I guarantee you this decision wasn't made by SBAllen. This may have some cost overhead benefits for the site however this removes some control SBAllen had over it previously.

Speaking from experience with seeing this happen to other companies, this is typically the beginning of a slope that leads to being eaten kirby style.

It doesn't. We're still staffed by the same three people after the change as we were before. If anything, it will help in that we can leverage other CBSi employees more if we'd like to, but nothing is changing with the chain of command, just the url in your browser.

ChromaticAngel posted...

Quite the opposite, CBSi is further leveraging on us to make them more money. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot to destroy the brand.

The most sensible explanation I can think of is GameFAQs is, despite Allen's constant bitching to the contrary, dying. So presumably Gamespot has better numbers, and they're hoping that carries over to FAQs in a merger.

Or it's all horseshit and this is just a step in dismantling GameFAQs as a whole. I find that far more likely.

I got you. Let's put it as simple as I can...

Advertising networks typically work on tiers (to some degree). Reach a certain threshold for traffic and you're able to use their platform. Increase your traffic and you can get better rates. For example, the promoted links by Taboola you see on these forums have a min. 500k impressions per month to be considered for their ads.

In the eyes of advertisers, there are 2 separate websites right now: GameFAQs and GameSpot.

By moving GameFAQs to a subdomain of GameSpot, they can combine their traffic metrics for advertisers. They go up a tier and can get paid more for ads.

In reality, it's a lot more complex than this and can work very differently depending on the advertiser but this should cover the concept at least.

Hope that helps, it's not like you can expect anything useful from @SBAllen

Eh honestly what he's said made sense to me, somewhat. The extra revenue thing from advertisements due to this change seems to make sense, and I don't see how this is really going to negatively affect any user at all so it seems like just being upset and shouting for the sake of it.

Not to say that if the site were dying he'd likely admit it, but this doesn't really seem like a warning sign.

If I had to guess, it would be because it's much more economically efficient to run the same amount of ads you were running before on less TLDs due to licensing issues.

Yeah, thank you SBAllen for making it clear you see us as numbers rather than a community.

Man, SBAllen is really working OT here, trying his best to conceal the fact that he is on a sinking ship.

Ever since I signed up to this site I've seen this:

2003: GameFAQs is dying.
2004: GameFAQs is dying.
2005: GameFAQs is dying.
2006: GameFAQs is dying.
2007: GameFAQs is dying.
2008: GameFAQs is dying.
2009: GameFAQs is dying.

Funny how it hasn't died yet.

It is a really slow death. It will happen eventually and then all those people will be proven right.

why not come up with a new name

cbsigaming.com

and then Gamespot can be cbsigaming.com/gs

GameFAQs can be cbsigaming.com/the_good_gaming_site

GameFAQs and GameSpot are two of the most well known video game websites. Why would you want to throw away that type of branding and start over with something brand new like that? That seems like a real bad idea. lol
