If we bitch enough will you stop this?

Remember all the bitching this site gives to Allen over offsite rallying during those site wide "best character/game/decade/etc. of?" Remember how much good that did? And you think this time is actually going to matter?

You're saying they couldn't accomplish that without a subdomain?

gamespot.com/gamefaqs wouldn't work?

It would work, but that essentially puts all of GameFAQs into the gamespot.com domain, and would pretty much make GameFAQs just parallel to gamespot.com/pc or gamespot.com/xbox.

If you want to keep the sites separate, a subdomain makes more sense, since you can have gamefaqs.gamespot.com point to the same IP as GameFAQs.com, then just have gamefaqs.com redirect to gamefaqs.gamespot.com. It's an easier transition than throwing the entirety of GameFAQs into a Gamespot subdirectory.

I think the goal there is to combine them both to a single domain and still keep the boards separate. One or more parties didn't want to move them to a single domain.

You're saying they couldn't accomplish that without a subdomain?

why would you have that clusterfuck of a URL which, by the way, uses the exact same DNS as gamespot.com thus ruining the search rankings.

How is that a clusterfuck? It's the exact same character length as using a subdomain.

You seriously think that move would ruin rankings? LOL

I can't say I get this from a business point of view. It doesn't help the traffic of either site, and if:

but the two entities will not be combined in any way. That means that the sites will not share a single login. The communities will continue to be separate. There will be no additional oversight from GameSpot. There will be no additional GameSpot branding.

then I have no clue how this helps with:

The primary reason for this domain change is to show that as a collective, GameFAQs and GameSpot are the definitive, largest destination for gaming on the Internet

All you're showing is a more convoluted URL.

That means they will continue to pay for a domain they dont use, forever.

Domain names are super cheap. CBS Interactive owns many domains that they do nothing with.

Thankyou for the feedback. I do feel a bit better knowing you feel confident theyre keeping the domain. I just know all too often when budget time comes a silly redirected domain is free money to "them".

Since it was aquired long ago hopefully someone has it on autorenew for cheap. :)

Anyways, other than the redirect, (@everyone else) this change doesnt mean much so lets relax... for now.

No it doesn't.

There is the fully-qualified domain to worry about, in this case www.gamespot.com/gamefaqs which is longer than gamefaqs.gamespot.com.

there are also other advantages to using a subdomain such as the ability to use a specialized or wildcard cert for https. as a website within gamespot, you can only use gamespot's cert which means when gamefaqs does something they have to make sure it plays nice with gamespot's cert. That increases SDLC time because you have to coordinate cert changes and deployments with more organizations.

and yes. full domains, TLDs, and subdomains all have priority in rankings over somebull.shit/morebull/shit.aspx?more=bullshit&shit=fromabull

1. I'm willing to bet this came from people above SBAllen and as the site admin he is just doing what a good employee would do and trying to make this a positive thing since he probably has no say in the matter at all...

2. I don't see this actually harming gfaqs really in anyway. Honestly, I don't see how it is going to somehow increase profits, but it also doesn't seem like it's go to actively harm gfaqs...

3. Now if this is just the beginning of things to come and soon gfaqs will be absorbed into gspot completely, then I will be concerned. For now it seems like a neutral change that doesn't hurt or help anything...
