Even in his Killers Kiss/Fear and Desire days they were not bad films. Scorsese, Allen, Bunuel, Fellini, Hitchcock, Woody, Coens, Lynch, Chaplin, Lang, Copolla, Leone, Godard, Truffant, Antonioni, Capra, Lean, Lumet, Tarkovsky god the list is long they all made some stinkers. The closest for me is probably Akira Kurosawa.

I remember reading he made one terrible film due to circumstances beyond his control, but from Terminator on he was unstoppable.

Funny things is Spielberg outside Duel, Jaws, close Encounters, Schindler, Raiders, and maybe ELI has been overrated crap. Sure jurassic was ok but not a classic. Kubrick k made like 15 movies in 50 years and none of them sucked.

Edit - ET not ELI

Since 1956 the killing Kubrick was on a mission, the producer screwed him in 1960 with Spartacus but he left for UK and became a true autuer beginning with Lolita. He wasn't a hack like Spielberg. All his movies since 56 are classics, the worst being Eyes Wide

Well let's see he's made like 50 plus films, and I didn't say he was crap, just not close to as perfect as Kubrick, he is still top 50.

Watch the original Insomnia with Stellan Skarsgrd. Every creative decision Nolan made in his remake was terrible. Everything good about it is lifted directly from the original.

Didn't he recently do a few so-so attempts to get back into Hollywood? Edge of Darkness, Get the Gringo and Blood Father come to mind. I only saw the former, though.

I couldn't agree more. It was great. I think it's my least favourite film in the trilogy, but that means basically nothing because even the worse in a series of amazing films can still be amazing in its own right.

Care to elaborate? I mean, Im looking at it as a stand-alone movie, and it works just fine. But Im curious as to what changes he made from the original.

Insomnia spoilers:

Nolan sanitized the story and turned it into a Hollywood hero epic where the main character kills the villain at the end of redeems himself for his wrongs via heroic sacrifice. In the original the killer (Robin Williams' character) and the detective both gets away with their crimes and theres no low-stake chase scenes to build tension around the detective-criminal relationship as the film focuses much more on Stellan Skarsgrds (Al Pacino's role) descend into depravity and guilt as metaphorically depicted in the arctic summer light. The film doesn't much care that the bad guy gets his come-uppance at the end, but such generic narrative is inserted into Nolan's version presumably to make it more mainstream. Further, Al Pacino's character is sanitized to stand out as more heroic. Probably the best example is that in the remake in order to fake balistic evidence he shoots a bullet into a dog carcass he conveniently happens to find, wheras in the original he just goes and finds a dog. Nolan also inserts a weird plot point about how Pacino's character may have intentionally shot his partner to cover up his own involvement in illegal activities, which as a base is very interesting and a cool way to differentiate from the original, but the film doesn't use this plot idea properly because there's no point at which its convincingly suggested that Pacino actually did it on purpose. Nolan also glamourized the look of the film which had a very unsettling atmosphere. It looks like any other "beautiful" Hollywood film in his version.

I find the atmosphere in Nolans version plenty unsettling. And even if he did polish some edges, you cant say that his version is a bad film. Its an expertly made thriller by any standard with excellent performances and cinematography.
