Mass Effect 1 had a ton of great ideas executed poorly.

EA got it's hands on the franchise, and instead of fixing said ideas so they could realize their potential, they simply cut them and made Mass Effect into a linear shooter.

The story is so good the other elements don't seem as bad.

Can't be said for the others in the series, and the gameplay in the others isn't "mind blowing" enough to cover up less than awesome or even bad story telling.

When I first started ME3, I remember that Jersey Shore reject waltzing in and Shepard was all friendly with him. I was thinking "Who the hell is that? Where are my actual (ingame) friends?"

When I was playing through Mass Effect 1 for the first time I spent a lot of time thinking about it. Like, when I was driving I was thinking about the protheans and Saren and some of the characters and their backstories. I was really into the story.

Mass Effect 2, the game was much better. The story was good, but it wasn't quite as good. Certainly not good enough for me to daydream about it when I wasn't playing the game.

And Mass Effect 3, amazing game, but the story? I don't even remember most of it.

ME1 was a great first entry. My only issue was the inventory and the combat wasn't as smooth as ME2 and ME3. The storyline and dialogue was top notch, it set a strong foundation for the sequels to follow.

ME2 is where the Mass Effect universe really came alive IMO. The graphics and combat improved, and the universe just felt more...alive. I'll never forget the first time I walked into club Afterlife when you met Aria with the music and ambiance of the scene when you first walk in, it was so fucking cool.

ME3 was great, I enjoyed it immensely...until the very end, that was bullshit. They tried to fix the ending afterwards but it left a bad taste in a lot of fan's mouths. That said I still loved it.

ME1 is still special to me, ME2 and ME3 wouldn't have been as good if they didn't have such a solid foundation to build upon.

ME1 has a bit of rose tinted glasses going on. It's not just the combat system too. I don't think people remember how dull the party members were back then outside of Wrex. Yes even Garrus was boring in ME1. They were mostly used to introduce the lore. The side quests were extremely repetitive on those uncharted planets.

ME1 has the advantage of having the best main plot (since it was overall simple) and being the introduction to that universe. Also your Shepard could be a racist douchebag to aliens and they dropped this angle in the sequels. That's about it.

ME2/3 may have wasted the potential of the lore/plot in some aspects. But pretty much everything that makes Mass Effect is better in them.

Mass Effect 1 doesn't hold up on subsequent playthroughs. Planet exploration is a chore.

That's literally what holds it back, IMO. It feels like too much filler.

Mass Effect 2, which could be argued is nothing BUT filler, is just a fucking joy to play through. It's never tedious and boring like Mass Effect 1's planet exploration shit.

Mass Effect 3 is pretty much the same, but the story drags and the ending sucks.

Honestly, the thing that really drags ME2 down than it should be is the planet scanning. You had to do hours of it to buy the upgrades.

I wouldn't "dislike" it as much if that just completely didn't exist.

Is that true even for a carry over playthrough? I don't recall having to spend hours to do it, but then again it's so easy to cheat that I don't think I've done it legit since I first bought the game.

You'd think, but every time this topic pops up you have people who come in and complain that 2 wasn't enough of an RPG and that makes Mass Effect 1 with it's infinitely more clunky gameplay, boring ass exploration and copy/paste weapons and armor better.

Only finished 1 and played 2 to like 70 or 80% completion.

1 was interesting, I enjoyed listening to the dialogues and learning the lore of the universe. There were some slow parts like the planetary exploration, but that was also fun to me. That's probably how real exploration would work, you don't just pick and choose what levels you do like in a video game. I won't say it was a perfect game, but it was pretty cool.

2 introduced the limited ammo system which made it feel more like a wave-based survival horror shooter instead of an RPG. There was no real plot development, you just spent the whole time finding crew members then playing therapist for them to get over their daddy issues so you could win at the end or something idk I never finished it. It was just boring. Also barely any of the choices you made in 1 seemed to make a difference in 2.

I can't imagine 3 was any good and ME A looks like ass so
