Let me clarify. The combat system of the game is great. From purely a gameplay perspective, Nioh delivers. Almost everything else falls kind of flat as of where I am in the game currently (Umi-Bozu which might still be considered early).

The story in this game isn't very interesting so far. From what I gather, William has to go get his spiritfu back while slaying yokai in Japan. Perhaps it will pick up eventually. Characters aren't very interesting, either.

I really don't like the loot system this game has going for it. Most of the gear I pick up is completely useless. I also don't like the environments. I know a lot of people do this and I'm going to do it, too. I honestly think the environments in Dark Souls and Bloodborne are far superior so far. That may be due to Nioh being mission based, though.

I'm not going to say anything about enemy variety. I hope more enemies are introduced later in the game. It's already boring fighting the same 6 enemy types over and over again but I may still be in early game.

My biggest issue with Nioh is the boss battles. Yeah, "git gud TC". Whatever. Listen, Hino-Enma, the bat yokai lady, was the only boss fight I truly enjoyed. A lot of these boss fights lack the presentation, music, and atmosphere of the Soulsbourne games. Furthermore, these fights are bullshit.

The optional fight with Tachibana Muneshige? Fun, but completely unfair. There were times where the boss ignored the rules of the game like the stamina system for instance. The fight with The Great Centipede was one of the worst designed boss fights I've seen in a long time. The idea was cool but it was executed poorly.

Not even going to comment on Umi-Bozu. Cheap bastard. I know how to beat him easily now but he's still full of shit.

Honestly, my favorite part of Nioh was the dossiers on the various yokai and guardian spirits.

If it hasn't hooked you by now, it probably isn't for you.

it doesn't, nioh sucks, it's a crappy dark souls clone with a dumb loot system, poor level design, frustrating bosses, and enemies that are never fun to fight

Basically after Umi, Umi represents the final obstacle of dumbness, and what lies ahead is largely nowhere near as dumb...however...

The story's pretty dopey as a whole. I think I've seen maybe like one person who even really liked it, so don't expect anything really.

This is going to be a big problem. Not liking a Diablo-style loot system in a game with one is just going to wreck the experience for you, unless by some miracle you warm up to it eventually and come to like it.

I also don't like the environments.

Your mind may not be changed much on that throughout the game. >_> But, maybe it will...but maybe not. Possibly not. <_<

It's widely accepted enemy variety is one of the game's weakest points. >_____>

Ehhhrm... I'm sure there's going to be more boss fights you like. And more you hate. So, some things to look forward to there. The game's got A LOT of them.

Yes! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I clocked in a shitload of time playing this game, obsessively, and yes, I can indeed confirm your observation is correct. That boss actually does cheat, ignores game mechanics. Fortunately, the degree he cheats is somewhat of an anomaly. He's not the only boss who cheats by ignoring some sort of fundamental core principle of combat, but he's definitely one of the most blatant examples, and his cheating also works very poorly with the other aspects of the fight to make the whole thing just kind of dumb.

So anyway, overall based off what you said, I'm not optimistic you'll enjoy the game much. It sounds like aspects of the game as well as flaws of it will just grate on you more and more with time. Maybe you'll feel better once beyond Umi but I don't see it as a high chance. I have told others before though that the game starts off somewhat rough and kind of consider Umi the peak of that roughness and stupidity. But you may still hate a lot of bosses and stuff up ahead.

The bosses never really rise to the level of what BB and DS3 have in terms of presentation and complexity. A lot of them even lack unique themes which is very unfortunate.

Interesting. I'll play some more of the game to see how it goes. I want to like Nioh. I think the formula for a fantastic game is there. The devs just need to refine and tweak it a little.

Yeah I agree with everyone else. If you aren't exactly sold by now, it won't really pick up in the way you'd like for it to.

You really feel the fact that the game was in developmental hell across multiple generations. Some mechanics just seem a bit dated. I like its attempt to be its own thing, but it really just comes off like a collage of different inspirations with no real cohesion.

I enjoyed it, for what it's worth, but not exactly game of the year.
