Yeah that was stupid. The entire point of that was that he hated himself after what he tried to do to Buffy and that spurned him to become better and earning his soul back... reading most of these I doubt the people actually watched these shows.

It really does seem people either miss the point of the character entirely, or pick on entirely the wrong flaws.

So yeah, likely they didn't watch it or are simply of the mind of looking to be offended.

Let's be fair, here. The fanbase loves Spike. Like literally loves him. Not even in a 'love to hate' sort of way. They think he is a hero and cheered when he came back as a 'good guy'. Not only that, but his whole story arc in the later seasons and Angel is how he is trying to be a good guy. You can't really argue, "he's a bad guy, he's not supposed to be good" when he joins the heroes in like season 4 and spends the rest of the series trying to improve himself and kill bad guys.

Looking through the list, the Xander Harris & Ross Gellar ones are actually pretty accurate. All the main characters of Friends are pretty bad people, tbh.

At the time of the incident he was a really bad guy pretending to be a good guy and trying to force something that wasn't really there. Thus his entire redemption arc and the huge moment that really sparked it.

I am aware and I don't think there's a problem with the arc. They knew what he had done and decided to give him another chance. There's no issues there

I mean, with Ross and Rachel they were both awful and abusive people to another. The rest of the cast were generally pretty bleh save from Phoebe from what I remember (besides being weird)

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great character and a good part of the later seasons of Buffy and Angel, I'm just saying that arguing that "He's supposed to be a bad guy" is sort of faulty since when he tried to rape Buffy, he was already on the good guy's side. I'm just pointing out that they aren't wrong that people give him a troubled bad-boy reputation when in reality he's a remorseless killing machine for most of the series.

That's not right though.

They had him become a "good guy" by virtue of a plot device that caused him intense pain whenever he tried to hurt a human. He eventually learned that he can attack other demons without pain and, due to the nature of the character, started to help kill demons because he enjoys fighting. He wasn't trying to improve himself. He was still a bad person, he was simply incapable of doing anything bad. He does do some good things, but his motivation is generally selfish (ie, he doesn't tell Glory about Dawn because he likes Dawn).

He fell in love with Buffy through events that I forget and she eventually discovers this. Later on, Buffy went through some shit and starts to use Spike for nasty, vicious, unhealthy comfort sex. When he attempts to rape her, it's genuinely not all that different from other sex they've had and she initiated. The scene is even framed in such a way that you go back and forth from sympathizing (for lack of a better word) between him and Buffy. When she finally gets him to back off and he realizes what he was doing, that's when he goes and gets his soul back. And when he gets his soul back, that's when he starts genuinely trying to atone because a vampire's soul is Jiminy Cricket in BTVS.

The first season or two were okay. Then they discovered who "A" was. It should have ended.
But it didn't, so they kept adding new antagonists that didn't make any sense and it just got more and more fucking silly.

Crazy Mona could have been a great character too, if someone with slightly competent writing skills were involved with the show.

I will never understand why I powered through the whole series. Total waste of my life.
