Why do teachers keep doing this shit?

Its a debate assignment. It is good to argue things like this so we have a better understanding of situations. I've had to do debate assignments for positions I did not agree with and it makes you really understand how the 'other side' felt what they did was right.

I'm sorry but 4th graders aren't capable of debate beyond name calling.

4th fucking grade.

You do not give them enough credit. I work with that age group; and it is amazing how much they know and are willing to share if you treat them like people and not children.

I remember in 6th grade I had a writing assignment where I had to come up with a solution for overpopulation (I chose overpopulation as the problem). One of the solutions I came up with was to round up the military and start executing a bunch of people randomly. I got a C+ on it.

Welcome to literally every country in the world -- including all the African ones -- before 1800.

Let's get real, by modern standards, most of the world has been fucked up for 95% of humanity's existence. That's not a particularly intelligent or useful way to teach history. Almost none of the ways people treated each other hundreds of years ago would be okay today.

I mean, I didn't deny this.

But what happened to simply presenting the facts and letting people come to their own conclusion? I know the real reason why slavery exists and I didn't have to go through an exercise asking me to justify slavery.

4th graders. Some of them don't fully understand the concept of sarcasm yet. And we're trying to get them to think about the motivations underpinning why some people exploited others for their own gain?

I agree with you. At a developmentally appropriate age. As mentioned several times in this thread, the minutiae in understanding complex social histories is a bit over their heads at that age. It's like trying to teach them calculus. Which is why people are jumping on you in this thread. It really comes off as disingenuous and you being a bit too eager in the exercise of thinking of "good" reasons for slavery.

@Garioshi

I can see what youre going for, but the way questions are worded is a statement in and of itself. A lesson in learning to call your teacher out on their bullshit doesnt excuse a horribly offensive idea.

For example, a comparable prompt would be something like list some reasons why the Jewish people deserved the holocaust.

i dont think there is nothing wrong with the assignment

is close to one i had
it was about prejudices we were asked several questions about positive and negative traits based on race income

if youd hire a chinese or an ex convict and many more one of them was about who would you trust and showed a pic with people from different races but it wasnt just about race
it was about their clothing and hair ...people choose the ones that looked like they were wearing new / clean or expensive clothes

the teacher wanted to talk about the difference between having prejudices and acting on them

the one on this story probably wanted to the students to write stuff like "I feel there is no good reason for slavery, that's why I did not write." on their own instead of telling them
