When I shitpost I assume they know I'm being an ass, I usually go well beyond into the absurd. With trolling, not the case.

I don't think the terms are always used in a consistent way, but if I had to draw a distinction, I would say that with shitposting is like trolling where you sort of make sure that everyone is in on it (which does lend itself to the it's an attempt to be funny thing) whereas with trolling you're trying to fool some people.

now defenders will come to attack you and other people will attack them

it isn't necessarily that talking about that wife is trolling, but it is a heated topic so how you word it makes it trolling or not
if you make negative assertions it will cause a flame war and be modded

essentially the pivot of making this a troll is to heavily provoke someone to come and defend, if they don't have to defend it because you weren't implying bad things and just kinda talking about it, they could just ignore the topic or very low profile talk about it as to not get attacked by others too

Shit posting is when someone post inane content that is a complete waste, and gives nothing positive or meaningful for a discussion. It can be annoying, it can be distracting, and it can aggravate users, but it isn't done intentionally to piss people off. Vegy is a prime example of a shit poster. He post garbage at a constant and consistent rate, and many people find his shit annoying. None of his content contribute meaningfully, and alot of it is bitching over women. Prime shit poster.

Trolling is when you post shit posting garbage to deliberately get a rise out of people. These are easier to spot. These would be people like Differential_Equation, unfair represent, hypncoosh, etc. They will deliberately argue about pointless and dead arguments, strawman, and say controversial and genuinely unlike things then back it up poorly, while never conceeding defeat, just to piss you off. They can be considered an advanced form of shit poster.
