There's always been talk of a general balance to the force, but "balance" in the old sense meant pure light side, that was the true uncorrupted form of the Force. This new thing TLJ set up goes against that completely, and doesn't even make much sense. Rey is automatically made as strong as Kylo to balance it out? Kylo revealing that she was a nobody and that her parents didnt matter was an important capstone, because it reinforced her conviction in herself. That said, it was one of the only things I liked about the movie. And Im being generous because Rian dropped the ball on character development up until that point and afterwards. The dynamic between Rey and Finn was the most important part of TFA. We needed to see those characters actually reach their moments, rather than those just suddenly being sprung upon them. Because Rey running from Kylo doesnt make sense. And Finn trying to sacrifice himself doesnt make sense.
