The good stories are outweighed by tons of dumb crap and it was starting to get to Dragon Ball Z levels of ridiculous power scaling in terms of Luke himself and whatever villains would come next. Also, people felt that every single little thing in the SW universe must have a backstory and must be connected to everything else. There's no loose canon, or some of it was canon, or whatever you liked was canon. The only things ever canon outside the movies were The Force Unleashed and the Clone Wars cartoon.
