Should be a pretty open and shut case if you're that invested in iMessage. Gotta do what's best for you.

Me personally, I couldn't care less about my texts appearing as green bubbles on my friends' iPhones. The other features of iMessage are duplicated with other apps, so I'm not missing anything.

There is no exclusive feature of iMessage except the crap you download.

I dont understand why having to replace a battery after two years is such a betrayal lmao, especially at thirty bux. definitely wouldnt pay the original $80, but for $30? sure, whatever, batteries die. nothing new there.

Because it has nothing to do with batteries, for one. It's an excuse Apple created after they got caught red handed with forced obsolescence.

No, I get it completely. iMessage is technically a chat service with SMS support. What falls apart, though, is the assumption that it's somehow superior to standard SMS. Hell, at least 90% of iMessage users don't even realize that it isn't SMS between iPhones. That doesn't change the fact that for the end user it's almost indistinguishable from SMS.

See I'm not sure what to do now. I have an iPhone 6s, but I never upgraded to ios11 because literally everyone I talked to said don't because it will ruin your phone. Should I get the replacement battery and then update?

Didn't Apple say that the bug was dropped on iOS 10.2.X? IIRC, it wasn't introduced on iOS 11. My former 6 Plus was 10.3.X, so it had it.

Oh I have no idea, I don't know much about it. That's just what everyone was telling me, to not update to 11, but I guess they didn't know much about it either then lol

Everyone knows batteries degrade. The issue here is that Apple intentionally throttled CPU performance, hid it, and only admitted it because they got caught with pie on their face.

All batteries are dying. They die at different times depending on frequency of phone usage. Apple is slowing down phones that still have good batteries. The actual number of people affected by problematic batteries (as in, the phone randomly shuts off at less than 50% charge) is very small.

Not to mention designing their hardware in such a way that the only choice for replacing a $5 component to keep using the $600 OS is to take it back to their store or admit defeat and buy the new phone.

Being able to replace a battery on a device was a standard until Apple came along, to my knowledge. Now we think it's design excellence to not be able to fix a simple problem like this at home.

Apple got caught deliberately slowing down iPhones with the latest update. They claim it's to save battery life on older iPhones.

Yes, you missed the most important point. iMessage features do not cross platforms and because everyone I know uses iMessage I would no longer receive those features if I were using Android.

So far, buying a new battery is the only option. But even then, it's probably not going to change the fact that iOS throttles older devices. It'll just make the battery last longer.

You can buy a new battery (Apple gets $$) or you can buy a new phone (Apple gets $$$$). Either way, Apple takes your money.

I'm not even convinced that getting a new battery resets the clock because I've tried that already.

I got a new battery for my 6S+ for free replaced under Apple Care+ (person I bought the phone off of had bought it for 2 years), and the battery life significantly improved compared to what it was, but it still doesn't feel as strong as it would be on a new device. I always just chalked it up to 11 being designed for a better processor.

So far the consensus is that iOS throttles based on model number, which is more or less an estimate of how old the phone is.

The throttling is dynamic and based on several factors like the age and temperature of the battery. It could be very light or it could be severe. It's not uninform like others have mentioned and it's not always running.

It is merely extended power management. Apple wasn't upfront about it, which was fucked up and obviously meant to target people on the fence and whatnot.

Title is pretty misleading
30$ gets you a new battery, but your phone will still be slow. It's not the battery that's slowing down the phones, it's the updates that Apple sends out to "stop batteries from degrading" by slowing down your phone.

Weird how this is apparently different in America, over here if you have someone's number it's almost guaranteed they use whatsapp.

Why is America being generalized based off one anecdote in this thread? I'm from America and use whatsapp. I also have used another app called textfree for free texting. Maybe because I use Andriod and not Apple I don't really know why someone would stick with one company over one app. Like what is going on with iMessage.

I use my texfree number for hookups and private life. I use my real number for work and family. It is great because it is like having two phones where I can screen and separate my life.
