Have you read the Hannibal books? The main characters are a war orphan/castoff trying to survive, and a genetically enhanced supersoldier who has been captured by enemy armed forces. Vicious (V.E. Schwab) - Dark gritty superhero book. In college, the two main characters were studying the phenomenon of superheroes, resulting in a series of experiments that went TOO FAR.
